![]() Swim
Comments: I started off okay but just couldn't get into a good rhythm. Two or three laps in all at once 3 people let me pass and I passed the next girl on the following lap. Pushed it a little harder than I should have (I haven't swam all week to let my shoulder heal) and was struggling to catch my breath the rest of the way. I let the kid behind me pass with 3 laps left and just drafted off of him the rest of the way instead of fighting to repass. Good call if I do say so myself. What would you do differently?: Get back in the pool more once my shoulder is 100% again. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Really good transition. This was the first race where I've left my shoes on my pedals on gotten into them once I'm moving. Forgot to leave my bike in an easier gear so I could have gotten up to speed a little quicker. What would you do differently?: Double check which gear I'm in when I first setup in transition. ![]() Bike
Comments: I pedaled on top of my shoes for a block or two until I had a good straightaway to climb into them. A little trouble with the left shoe but I think I did a decent job for my first try in a race. After that I could tell right away that my quads were shot from my race yesterday. Between the two I treated the Mud Run as the A race so the fatigue wasn't much of a surprise. I focused on my form and cadence and just tried to find a rhythm that I could maintain. People were spread out fairly well on account of the pool swim so it was pretty much reel one person in, pass them and on the next one in line. I started in the pool as number 310 and the last person I remember passing on the bike was 240. So I had moved up the field pretty well. It took me about 5 or 6 miles before I started to feel good and began to really hammer away. I drank quite a bit of Gu2o the first 8 miles, ate my Hammer Gel and only had a little bit of water the last half. Only complaint was the decorative crosswalks in the neighborhood before the park. Horribly rough and I nearly lost my balance on the first one I hit since I was reaching for my bottle and not expecting a surface change like that. Other than that it was a good ride. Never got passed and passed alot of people. Did a good job of getting out of my shoes and running into T2. Results: 2nd in my AG and 7th overall. I could have done some serious damage with a proper taper. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I could have rode better if I would have taken it easy yesterday, but the other race was more important to me. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: OMG I'M AN IDIOT! I forgot to put on my race belt! Dumbest thing I've ever done during a race. It was a damn fast T2, but it wasn't legal either. What would you do differently?: If you can't figure this one out..... ![]() Run
Comments: Started out well and found my rhythm very quickly. Actually passed people coming out of the gate. I didn't even get a 1/4 mile before I realized I had left my number behind! I started to turn and go back for it but this wasn't an A race and I decided to just keep going. I was fine with taking a time penalty or even having to do the run twice in order to be an official finisher. I just wanted to enjoy my run (or first run). I had to carry my flag a little lower than usual on account of all the trees, but I felt comfortable the whole way and pushed a hard but maintainable pace. Got a mouthful of water at the turn around point and was surprised to look down at my watch and see that I was on a PR pace (for the race, not the run). I did a good job putting that thought out of my mind and just tried to relax and run effeciently. Fairly lonely on the way back and only passed one other person. Crossed the finish line and asked an official about my number. He said not to worry about it so I didn't. What would you do differently?: Great run for me. Might have been a 5K PR (this was only 3 miles though) but I guess we'll never know. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Put my flag and HRM with my stuff in transition. Found David and Kevin and we talked about the race. Got myself some fruit, a bagel, mini muffins, and ice cream. Slowly found all the BTers and the TCU tri club and it looks like everyone had a pretty good day. The only results posted were swim splits and overall times. Bumped into Chris(Cheddar_son) and Tom(tomtri). Everywhere I turned it was BTers! Packed up my stuff and took a few photos for the "Does anyone have a spare bike?" girls (see below). Talked with Mandi, Patrick and Kevin before the awards ceremony and headed home. Final Results: Only 6th in my AG but 22nd overall. This was my second top 10 overall bike finish which is one of my goals for next season. So all in all it was a great day. Oh, and this is my new sprint tri PR. What limited your ability to perform faster: I had a killer of an A race the day before. My arms, quads and hamstrings were toast but were good enough for top 10%. I couldn't have asked for anymore. Event comments: Small race but a good course. Lots of great people are what made this race a good one. I'll be back next year unless I can find another race the same day. Woke up a good bit earlier than I needed to for today. I set my alarm so that I could get up in time to watch the last hour of IM Kona. I love seeing those last people finish under the wire. The crowd just goes nuts and you can't help but tear up when you think about what they've accomplished. So I watched the Ironmen come in one-by-one as I ate my usual pre-race whole wheat bagel w/ peanut butter, 1/4 liter of Gatorade and two mixed fruit cups. Once the race was over I hopped in the shower to shave, trimmed the beard, double checked my gear and headed out.
I got my race numbers and went to find a spot in transition. I was able to find Kevin(goodzen) easily since we had met the day before when we were driving and walking over the bike course. Apparently he got there at 2am and had been setup for ages. He told me the supposed flow of transition (turns out we didn't have to run around to the back of transition after all) and I picked a prime spot on the end of a row. Got my spot setup as we talked and it just so happened that Gin(GiddyUp) was on the next rack over, overheard us and realized who we were.
I walked around to check out all the bikes and said hi to Trey and Mary Ellen. Got my chip and had a look at the pool and walked through what I would have to do once I got out of the water. Bumped into Mandi(MandiGayle) and David(davidb) and we all introduced ourselves and killed time before the race meeting (see photo below). Unfortunately we didn't find Patrick(pds0006) or Brian(briathlon) until after we got the photo (sorry about that guys).
David left for a bit and returned later asking if anyone could change a tire. It was for a girl who was running her very first race. Apparently on her way here she was having problems with her bike rack and her bike actually fell off and the rear tire got thrashed pretty bad. She had been in front of me getting off the freeway and when she pulled over I stopped to ask if everything was okay. She said it was so I kept going and a little later her bike fell off the rack. So now her friend had a spare tire for her but she didn't know how to change it. So I strip the wheel for her, put on the new tube and start to put the replacement tire on. But it was the wrong size tire! So now this girl is freaking out that she won't be able to run her first tri. She goes to ask the RD to make an announcement about her situation and I ask around to try and find someone with a spare tire. Luckily she found a couple who were going to do the race seperatly but decided at the last minute to run as a relay. So they had an extra bike and she was saved in the nick of time.
So the BTers all hung out through the announcements and Mandi, Patrick and I joked around as we watched the faster swimmers take their turn in the pool. We were all towards the end of the seeding and had plenty of time to kill as we cheered on more aquatically gifted athletes.
