Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 and left at 5am for race site. Arrived about 6:10, potty, packet pick-up, set up transition. Wasn't feeling well due to severe congestion and head-ache. Have been dealing with allergies for 3 days.
Event warmup:

None. Figured I had a 1.2 mile swim to warm up.
Swim
  • 39m 48s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt really good during the swim. I was very relaxed and hit a good rhythm early and held it. Had one distraction when I was elbowed under the chin and bit my tongue. Hit every bouy within arms reach! Finished about 4 minutes ahead of my goal time but felt good enought to not worry about it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1

Comments:

Took my time here to let my heart rate come down to bike level.

Comments:

Wanting to take it nice and easy on the bike so I'd have a good run. I am actually o.k. with this even though it's really slow...even for me. I am slow on the bike anyway but the goal was to finish around 3:05-3:10 and still feel strong for the run.

Comments:

So, I was running along having a great time feeling good, being social, throwing the high fives...no worries! I stopped at mile 1 to pee because I'd been waiting, oh, about 2 hours to pee. Grabbed that cold sponge at the aid station and felt like a million bucks. I really had a great run going until about mile 6 and my feet went numb (like Nat). I stopped to stretch my calves and loosen my laces. My feet felt better and then about mile 9 the pain started in the knee. Just short of mile 12 it felt like someone stabbed me in the knee with a knife. I was stopped in my tracks. I looked at my watch and needed to finish within 16 minutes to hit 6:00:00. Sadly, it took me 34 minutes of limping to finish the last mile and a half. I've never had that kind of pain before in my life! It was excruciating and the medic asked if he could help me or take me in. This was the first time quitting has ever entered my mind...EVER! I worked too long and too hard to stop so I hobbled to the finish and straight to the medical tent for ice. REALLY SUCKS! I was on pace for a 5:52 when the pain hit. Oh well...
