Swim
Comments: I wasn't really pushing it hard enough at first. I think the cold water kinda startled me. Rounding the buoy was not very good as I got clogged up with some slow swimmers. But overall the performance was pretty good. New goggles did great. Last year's time was 9:22 so nice improvement there. Would have been 5/15 if I had raced AG. What would you do differently?: I'm not sure how to avoid getting stuck behind the slow swimmers. Obviously, they are significantly underestimating there swim time. Transition 1
Comments: Ear plug got lodged again (like last year! weird that this has only ever happened twice including training and both times were at this race) but instead of panicking, I just kept moving and managed to get the thing out by the time I got to my bike. It was rather painful though. Too bad my ears are so sensitive or I'd just give up the ear plugs for the races. Everything else went smoothly. What would you do differently?: Practice more. Bike
Comments: The wind was pretty rough. I pushed myself hard hoping to break the 20 MPH barrier this race and came really close but just missed it. I did really well though and it was a good performance. Had the wind not been an issue, I definitely would have gotten the 20 MPH goal. I took a GU around mile 10. Last year's time was 47:23 so again, nice improvement. Would have been 3/15 if I had raced AG. What would you do differently?: I had a great bike. I'll just continue to work hard and improve. Transition 2
Comments: Had to move somebody's bike a bit to get my wedged in, but overall a very quick and smooth transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I've been practicing T2 during my BRICKs so I think it went well. Run
Comments: I felt strong and good on the run. I love that I had such a great time on a hilly course. Yea me! Finished with a sprint on the last 200 yards or so. Last year's time was 31:57 - sweet improvement here. Would have been 5/15 if I had raced AG. What would you do differently?: I had a great run. I'll just continue to work hard and improve. Post race
Warm down: Water, pizza, cookies, stretching, talking to family and friends. Went to the awards ceremony - got a cute little trophy with a frog on it and a medal and a $20 gift certificate to Fleet Feet. What limited your ability to perform faster: The stubbed toe turned out to not be an issue thank goodness. I guess my only real hindrance was being stuck behind some slow swimmers around the buoy and of course the ever present hindrance of always needing more miles. :) Last year's time was 1:32:01 and I thought I was smoking. I am pumped to have taken 8:38 off of last year's time. WTG me!! Would have been 3/15 in my age group (20-24) if I had raced AG - which means I still would have podiumed!! Event comments: One of my favorite races and it is already on the schedule for next year. Very well organized and just a fun race. The volunteers did great and I would recommend it to anyone. Woke up about 5:30. Stubbed the crap out of my toe in the dark. Oatmeal and peanut butter for breakfast. Drank a G2 on the way there + some water. Setup transition (actually got a good spot), got marked, had a little extra time to stand around. Took a GU 15 min before the start.
It was freezing and overcast so I didn't get in the water before the race. Just did some dynamic stretching on the beach.
