Pre-race routine:

Up EARLY. Ate granola, milk and a banana. Washed it all down with a Gatorade.
Event warmup:

No warm-up, though I think for the next race I'm going to try to jog to get aerobic before the swim. The start of the swim is still tough for me until I get warmed up.
Swim
  • 27m 54s
  • 984 yards
  • 02m 50s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

I gotta figure out a way to hit the water warmed up. Then I'll be much faster.
Transition 1
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

Again, T1 is easy when it's empty. My wave was long gone by the time I got to my bike! I had a great spot in the transition area and plenty of time to make sure everything was as it was supposed to be before I got wet.
What would you do differently?:

T1 was as good as I can do it. I can try to do the shoes on the bike thing, or run more, but my hear was slamming, so I figured it was a good take it easy point in the race.
Bike
  • 1h 03m 52s
  • 17 miles
  • 15.97 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

As I continue to do races I'm sure I'll push harder on the bike. I'm still too worried about running out of gas on the run to really give 100% on the bike. This wasn't my best bike time on this course, and I can only imagine that's why.
Transition 2
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

DOH -- Forgot my race belt/number! Had to retrace about 50 yards of the run out.
What would you do differently?:

Gotta make sure that the race belt is on top of my sneakers.
Run
  • 1h 06m 3s
  • 5 miles
  • 13m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Really ran "my race" during the run. I was happy with where my HR was, I walked 4 water stations to get some liquid in me, I walked up the two sections of hill that I planned to walk. Next year, it'll be 11:00 miles, but this year was about getting to the end with a smile.
What would you do differently?:

Just have to train to handle a race this long. I've got to work on run pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Got lots of water (three bottles), shade. My buddy Ian was there to meet his wife (who passed me on the run with about half a mile left). Got a great photo.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I've got to get more comfortable really pushing myself during the bike and the run. There's a shorter sprint next, so perhaps that's one that I can really bite into and not worry about "just finishing," but finishing fast.

Event comments:

There's a LOT of people at this event. The organizers did a FANTASTIC job.

My heart was slamming right after I got in the water. High 150s. Not a good swim HR for me. Then during the long run from the swim to transition I got to 175. That was when I thought walking would be a good idea.
Suit: Orca
Course: The course was great. Water was pretty clear, though at the shore things got pretty brown -- just churn from the bodies. Sun glare was a real issue sighting. Next year I wear my dark dark goggles.

Course: The course is great. You ride all through Franklin Lakes. I love the lollipop into Campgaw. The hills that seems so massive when I started training slowed me down, but were not that terrible. You give up some time on the course at some of the intersections. There's great volunteers, but the traffic causes you to give back some (not a lot) of time.
