Swim
Comments: The swim was good. I was sighting off of someone in my group that was swimming at my pace and breathing to his right. Since, I breathe to my left and could see him sighting now and then so I could swim without sighting as much. I assume he was doing the same? I had a solid swim and really enjoyed it. What would you do differently?: Kick more and upgrade my wetsuit since it is to tight. Transition 1
Comments: Ok, since the Oklahoma Redman Half Iron-distance race has been the only other race I have completed a couple of times I made the BIG MISTAKE of thinking that this race would have wetsuit strippers all over the place and people using them everywhere. Since, that didn't happen I had the hardest time in the world getting the back of my wetsuit open. The Velcro was like super-glued together. That had me all mentally drained and I walked down the wrong bike row. Backtracked to the correct row and finally found my bike. What would you do differently?: ASK for help!!! Upgrade wetsuit. Bike
Comments: My goal was to break 3 hours. The hills are a nice change to my normal flat training loop in Wichita. The oil spill corner was like I was doing my first cyclecross! I need to train harder on my bike to improve my speed. TIP: I used electrical tape to hold my gel packs on my top tube and forgot to use scissors to pre-cut the side of the gel packs. I would pull and pull to open a pack and it would be all over my arm and bike (lesson learned). What would you do differently?: Upgrade my wheelset??? Train harder. Transition 2
Comments: Had to wait in line to use the bathroom. What would you do differently?: Pee myself??? Thought about how I could spend $2000 on a new wheelset and save a couple of minutes on my bike split or pee myself for free to save the same amount of time... Any comments on this one? :) Run
Comments: Started the run feeling like it was going to be to HOT and hard for me to run under 2 hours and hit my ultimate goal of under 5:30 (Last PR was 5:54 @ Redman 08). After 3 miles into the run I was on autopilot. I was walking at the aid stations to drink a Gatorade then water. I would then dump water on my head and back. Put ice in my shirt and take off. Around mile 9 I noticed my watch had been stopped. I had no idea what time I was at. I think this turned out to be a good thing because I turned up the heat to try and hit my goal. I turned the last corner high-fived the Scarecrow, Tinman, Cowardly Lion, and Dorothy to the finish line! What would you do differently?: Push harder after mile 2! Post race
Warm down: After crossing the finish line I seen Chrissie Wellington handing out the finisher medals and was way excited to have her put my medal around my neck! She is awesome! Walked around for 30 minutes looking for my wife… Then PIP TAYLOR walked by me and I freaked out! I turned around and ran over to her to tell her how BIG of a fan I am of hers. She was super-nice and her husband handed me a PIP visor! Her Australian accent matched her physique. She is BEAUTIFUL! (So is my wife that happened to get a picture of them both!) What a weekend, race, and PR to boot!!! What limited your ability to perform faster: Mentally, I was holding back on the run. Maybe next year... Event comments: I had a great time! First Kansas 70.3 race for me. Arrived at the campsite around noon on Saturday and my wife and I setup the tent and unloaded the car. Walked over to the registration tent, which was only a block away! Checked in my bike and noticed that someone had used sidewalk chalk to draw an arrow to point at their bike (great idea). I also noticed that the bike rack signs were only numbered on the side that was away from the swim finish?? I thought that was backwards and walked over to the swim finish and tried to get a good visual of what row my bike was down. After that we checked out T2 and picked up the campsite vehicle pass. Drove downtown to relax and eat dinner. We stopped at Sunflower Bike Shop and looked around, and then stopped at the Sandbar so I could show my wife the bar I partied at on my 21st birthday. Holy $%#& was that really 14 years ago…… That bar was so fun and she had the famous Sandbar Shark Attack drink while I enjoyed my water. :( Walked to 715 Restaurant and had dinner (spaghetti). Drove back to camp and relaxed. Woke up around 2am to my wife saying something was getting into the trash bag outside the tent. Then the shadow of a raccoon walked by the front of the tent, LOL. Put all the trash into the car and back to sleep. The camping decision was prefect.
Woke up at 5am and ate a bagel with peanut butter then a banana. Downed my OJ and headed to T1 around 5:30. Setup T1 and heard the swim would be wetsuit legal. I was glad to hear that and headed down to T2. Put down a very colorful towel under my front wheel to help me find my bike. Used my new Sportslick tube and I think it works a lot better then Bodyglide since it comes out of a tube into your hand like toothpaste. It was super easy to apply (Sold on that product). Ready to go and headed to the swim start to watch the Pro’s!!! Chris Lieto walked by me and I wished him good luck. He said, “Thanks!” which was cool!
