Swim
Comments: I was very nervous before this race because of coming off of illness. For the first part, I just kept thinking "Swim to the next buoy" and it got me through. What would you do differently?: I wish there had been more buoys or sighting landmarks when going on the across part of the swim. I tried to alternate 20 strokes of free with about 10 of breast, but everytime I breaststroked I felt like I was kicking someone. I never got into a great rhythm, and several times I had backstrokers swim on top of me. Overall, though, I thought it wasn't a bad result. Transition 1
Comments: The run to my transition area wasn't too bad, and I got myself together pretty quickly. The run (well, walk) with the bike to the bike mount felt ridiculously long - maube a 1/4 mile or more - and over grass, then wood chips, etc. In short, it was hard to do in bike shoes! What would you do differently?: Run with bike? Bike
Comments: I rented my bike since I flew in for the race. I rode the bike for about 10 min on Saturday before I racked it, and felt the frame was too small. The handlebars were WAY too low, and my back felt it about 1 mile into the ride. I felt pretty good on the ride, though. The last mile was NOT well planned on the course though - it was a no pass zone on sidewalks. I had figured I could just push myself for the last mile, but it was impossible given course conditions. That definitely slowed me down. What would you do differently?: Bring my own bike next time! Or order a size larger... Transition 2
Comments: Fine transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing of note Run
Comments: I had my HR monitor on for this race, and my plan was to run when my HR slowed down to a breathable range. My run is ALWAYS my worst segment, and I did not want to risk dehydration because I was still not well. I came off the bike with a HR in the high 160s, and even though I walked the run, the HR never went below the 150s, so I decided not to chance it. I did take the run time to cheer on some new triathletes I saw on the course who seemed to be struggling, and had quite a few good brief conversations. The best part of the run is that it doubles back on itself twice, so I got to see both of my friends (one in front, one behind) and we cheered each other on. What would you do differently?: I probably should have run some, but I was not in the mental or physical shape to push it on this one. Post race
Warm down: I finished, then met up with one friend and we cheered our third friend to her first tri finish. It is so inspiring to me to see a friend become a triathlete that I welled up a little. The funny thing is I never cry about my own races, but I get emotional at my friends' journeys - go figure! After the race, we had a lovely Mother's Day brunch, spa massages, and a fantastic dinner. All in all, it ended up being a lovely day. What limited your ability to perform faster: ILLNESS! Strep, fever, travel, nerves, poor bike fit and no sleep. This race was just a perfect storm of things that can go wrong at the last minute. But I am happy that I still did it, and that I pushed through the "I can't" in my head. We are already planning our next race together! Event comments: A good race for first timers. Plenty of positive female energy, and a well supported event. Last updated: 2010-02-07 12:00 AM

This was a race I flew down to FL to compete in. It was girl's weekend with some of my best friends from college, plus the first triathlon for one friend (yay dinabean!). Although I had been training for months (and this was my 4th tri), I got strep throat on FRIDAY before the race and had a fever up until Saturday. Needless to say, my goal was just to finish this one.
Race expo and mandatory bike racking on Saturday, followed by a relaxing evening in our Fort Wilderness cabin (very nice!). We got up at 5 am, had breakfast, and walked about 1 mile to the race area.
