Swim
Comments: They announced that the water temp was 81 degrees, not wetsuit legal. Didn't matter to me, I had been swimming in my lake both with the wetsuit and without, just in case. Realized that I would be 10 minutes or so slower without the wetsuit but so would everyone else, so no big deal. Water was calm, No 4 - 5 foot waves!!! Large triangle course, very well marked. Decided that I would let the wave start and I would bring up the rear of my wave. I wasn't excited about fighting for space in the water when I wouldn't lose that much time waiting. Maybe 15 seconds? What would you do differently?: Nothing at all, very pleased with results Transition 1
Comments: I drank about 20 ounces of Infinit before the bike, and ate 1 peanut butter and jelly sandwich with the crust removed, sorry Gary. Looked like a monkey with a football in transition if you know what I mean. What would you do differently?: Practice this beforehand. I allowed myself 5 minutes for the trans. and was able to beat that, but could have done much, much better. Bike
Comments: I have been riding on all of the hills that I could in prep. for Louisville and this race. We just don't have hills like this in my area. I judged my output based on my "feeling" since the HR monitor was not registering. Determined the problem was, I borrowed a friends 405 for the bike and was going to use my 405 for the run. I never paired their 405 with my HR strap. I did drop my chain on a long hard hill. Had to dismount to pick it back up. Almost busted my butt getting of the bike. Drank 40 ounces of Infinit endurance on the ride. Had to remix at half waypoint. Had 20 ounces of double strength mixed and diluted with on course water. Worked well. My speedfill was wonderful, not sure why everyone doesn't use one? What would you do differently?: Find more hills to ride and pair the dang 405 to my strap prior to the race. I hate technology! Transition 2
Comments: Transition very good. Again I planned on 5 minutes and only took 2:23. Planned on eating another PBJ, but it was stale, yuck. Grabbed my 2 bottles of Infinit out of my cooler, dumped the icewater from the cooler over my head and away I went. What would you do differently?: Not sure but sure there is something I could improve on. Run
Comments: This is under the run comments but should be under the run/walk comments. I have prided myself on not having to walk in my races. Not the case in these HIM races. I probably ran 3/4 of the race and walked the rest. I knew this would be my rate determining step, but just didn't realize why. I wasn't "hurting" just didn't have any energy. I will work with Infinit to tweak my formula to ensure that I have energy in Louisville for the IM. I did end up walking and running with some great guys. Chip, Mike, and Hunter, thanks for keeping me on track and helping motivate me during the run. I also saw Brian on the run several times, did I tell you he is a great guy. Go to his link and read his story. What would you do differently?: Work out my nutrition better, Make sure to have HR monitor, figure out way to run the entire race and not walk. It was my slowest half marathon distance ever. Post race
Warm down: Plenty of water and cold shower in the cold shower tent. Everything else was fine. What limited your ability to perform faster: No energy at the end, not hurting, just out of energy. Event comments: Wanted to run 6 hours or below. 6:23 not bad for my first Half. I have no idea how they managed to organize this event but thought they did a very good job. Loved the volunteers. Loved the race. Loved the country. I have been spending this following week in north Georgia, riding the hills, I will not be defeated! Last updated: 2010-04-25 12:00 AM

Start my prerace the day before at the expo. Went to the venue to check in my bike and look around a litte. Ran in to a friend that I had made on the BT website, Brian, Screen name "multisportsministries" I think. Spoke with him a few minutes and let me tell you about a great guy and his wife. He is the guy that is into Kona via the lottery. Ended up eating dinner and spending a good amount of time with them and really count myself to be blessed to have met them.
Day of race, up at 4:30, eat 2 cups of oatmeal and part of a banana, swing by to pick up Brian and off to the race. Very little nerves, actually excited about the race. My wife and son are on hand to cheer and support me.
All I did at the race to warm up was get in the water and swim about 75 yards.
