Pre-race routine:

Drove down on Friday, had dinner with friends, got some sleep, had some oatmeal and 2 boiled eggs with water to drink about 3 hours before swim start...Continued to drink water before the event..
Event warmup:

Rode bike from hotel to the race site, was a little over a mile away.. Went to top air pressure off in tubular tire and couldn't get the rear to take air..Had the bike repair shop on-site look at it and they had no luck..So had to roll with what I had..Found people to talk to trying to keep mind off this issue.. Got bike and gear set up in transition area..Walked the in and out several times to make sure I knew where my bike was..Made way to watch the sprint swim start..15 minutes before my swim start I had one hammer gel..
Swim
  • 33m 6s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

We were told that we would swim with the current but when they set this up the swim was into the current..I think this cost me some time..Overall I felt like I did good I passed several people and was able to maintain on course despite not being able to see the buoys that well..Made a good turn around the last buoy and turned it on to the finish..
What would you do differently?:

Continue to work on swim technique, still need to work on bilateral breathing..
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

First time running through the sand, took the water they were giving to drink and used it to rinse feet off before putting on bike shoes.Felt like I did good..Was 5/22 in my age group..
What would you do differently?:

Practice the bike with shoes already clipped in to save more time..
Bike
  • 1h 07m 28s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.10 mile/hr
Comments:

Got up to speed, this course was flat except for the hill climb over the bridge, had to push hard back in to keep my pace due to a 5-10 headwind the last 12 miles..Have made big gains on the bike since June..This ride was on the Guru TT bike again..Had 3 cliff blocks at the beginner of the ride/ had a hammer gel at mile 22..
What would you do differently?:

Just continue to work on bike..get legs stronger to be able to push in harder gears to improve pacing..

Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Got right to spot on the other in of transition area, bike racked shoes on,helmet off grabbed visor and race belt put it on during the run..Was 3/22 in age group..
What would you do differently?:

Just continue to work this into my training every second helps..
Run
  • 59m 32s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

This run was hard,it was the hardest I have had to push myself this year to keep going...I poured several cups of water over my head and body at each station but still was hot.The heat index was between 104-110 with super high humidity..I started off good, pacing below 9:00 minute miles but around mile four I had to fight those voices in my head so I would walk a few seconds to get my heart-rate down then pick out a landmark and run to it. Mile 4 and 5 went above the 10 min/mile pace. I was able to push myself even though I felt like walking to the finish. When I got to the last .20 I sprinted to the finish line. After finishing I sat down in the shade and put some ice on my neck trying to cool-down..This run was brutal or should I say a b***h!!
After looking at the results majority of the field was above one hour..I passed several people that were walking..
What would you do differently?:

I've made great strides since June on my running/I was a little disappointed because I was able to maintain an 8min/mile pace last week.. This would have put me in the top three...So I will continue to move forward and work on my form and cadence.
Post race
Warm down:

Just sat in the shade with an ice bag,had water, recovery drink, banana and an apple.. After cooling down was able to watch my friend finish..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think the heat along with taking in some salt water on the swim caused me trouble on the run, the salt water will dehydrate you faster.. I just couldn't never seem to get up to pace during the run even though some of my run training was in the heat of the day..

Event comments:

This was a great learning experience..Team Magic runs a great race..I will look at doing this race again next year and go after beating this time..Overall I have had a great first year so it is only up from here..
I will be looking at getting a tri bike this offseason..
Half Ironman is in sight...
