Swim
Comments: This includes a pretty long distance out of the school, across a parking lot and down a flight of steps to the TA. By my watch, my actual pace in the water was 1:51 per 100 yds. Seeing as how my only real goal for the day was to swim at a 2:00 pace or better, I'm happy with the day. I was one of the last people to go, there may have been 10 after me. No one passed me in the pool, but I didn't pass anyone either. What would you do differently?: Learn some technique. Transition 1
Comments: Due to my position in the swim start, there weren't many bikes in transition when I got there. I'm used to that sight though. :) C race, so I wasn't racing the transitions today. This was a high intensity training day. Decided to put a long sleeve shirt on which took extra time obviously but it was worth it. Putting the wet socks on took some time. Dug around the bag etc. Forget to put on my glasses. Luckily the rain slowed down considerably so I didn't really miss them. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I wasn't racing this part. Bike
Comments: I need to do hill work on the bike. This is where the spinner is a liability. I had nothing on those hills. Got passed by one girl who was right behind me in the pool. There were maybe 10 people after me so it's not like there were a lot of people behind me. I'd only been on the bike once in the two weeks before this, and that was for 30 minutes the day before so I get a poor showing was to be expected. This was actually a slower pace than my half IM two weeks prior. Then again, as a training day it was ok What would you do differently?: Train before the race. Transition 2
Comments: Again, just moseyed through this. Took the shirt off for the sole purpose of displaying the BT logo on the run. That took a little time. Did my gel/water mix. BTW, the Hammer Apple Cinammon gel is dee-lish. What would you do differently?: Go 3 seconds faster so I could have beat the number 9 guy. 2 freaking seconds. Come on. Time trial start. If I knew and saw him I would have picked him off. Run
Comments: Just couldn't get my HR way up and my legs really felt tired. A high effort level wasn't in me. Not surprising given the last few weeks and the race on Thursday. I didn't expect a great run, but I didn't think my pace would be over 8 minutes. Wow. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: A HIM two weeks prior with next to no training afterwards. A 3.5 mile road race 3 days prior. Event comments: The parts handled by the town of Pittsford were kind of bumpy and showed inexperience with race organization. The parts handled by Score-This were spot on as usual. This is low key opener/warm up for the tri season around Rochester. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for first timers due to the rolling nature of the course. If you have a heavier bike and/or aren't an experienced cyclist and runner the hills on this course can be really tough. Also the level of organization isn't really representative of other races. If you are an experienced runner/cyclist or triathlete and are looking for a good early season tune up with a hilly course, this fits the bill. I'll be there again next year. Up at 5:20, had a banana, loaded the bike in the car, got a cup of coffee on the way.
The pre-race scene was pretty chaotic. Granted this was a small race put on by the town, but disorganization ruled the morning.
And someone there needs to learn the first rule of customer service: when things go wrong, the one thing people want is information. The line to get bib numbers stopped for around 10 minutes and not a word was said to the athletes. We stood there in the cold and rain while folks stood behind the table not saying a single word to us. That will only make people aggravated. Explain what's going on and most people will understand.
Some people rightfully started to freak out when it was announced that the race would start in 10 minutes even though they were standing there in a non-moving line through no fault of their own.
No warm up. I was hoping to get some running and maybe a short bike in beforehand but the chaos at the beginning prevented it.
