Pre-race routine:

First time triathlete...4 hours of nervous sleep followed by a horrible breakfast and an hour drive to the venue. Hammergel about 30min b4 the start.
Notables working up to the race:
Decided to do the race about 3 weeks b4 the race.
10 yr anniversary in Costa Rica July 4-10 - only 2 runs in the jungle and beach there, some light hiking and lots of eating.
Dropped 11 lbs in the 3 weeks leading up to the race (intentionally via calorie restriction, paleo-ish eating (modified for pre/during/post training carbing).
Race weight was 191. My old goal weight was 185, but I think I will go lower while trying to preserve lean mass. Possibly 175 before focusing on lean weight gain.
Event warmup:

100M swim with very light stretching.
Swim
  • 11h 01m
  • 547 yards
  • 2h 00m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

A minute faster than my best 500M OWS practice.
What would you do differently?:

Train a lot more in the swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Short jog from water to the transition area. I had the approach, my location and exist mentally mapped, so navigation was no problem. No notable problems, just generally a bit slow.
What would you do differently?:

Have Tri shoes and do barefoot flying mount.
Bike
  • 47m 5s
  • 13.8 miles
  • 17.59 mile/hr
Comments:

Problems with frt der shifting down from big rig to middle (I roll a triple).
Need to do some interval training to up my lactate threshold and speed.
Need to be more confident on my run so I don't worry too much on the bike about conserving for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Train a lot more on the bike, including this race I have logged 181 miles on a road bike (ever). I am a mountain biker and love it.
Commuting 12.5 miles to work and home a few times served for the bike training portion along with 1 west Austin (scenic, mt bonnell, balcones) 24 mile training ride.
Transition 2
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

Slow getting shoes swapped and had to dry sunglasses off, might be faster to have 2 pair.
What would you do differently?:

2 pair of glasses, 1 for bike, 1 for run.
Lock laces.
Dismount out of shoes to run barefoot.
Run
  • 28m 43s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Simply need to work on my run. More mileage and more speed - I hate running. It was
What would you do differently?:

Train more, intervals.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around.
Water.
My post work race drink was 4 scoops of gatorade powder with 20grams of PeptoPro powder in about 24oz water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being new, conserving energy on the bike due to concerns about run.
