Pre-race routine:

Set up bike and transition area -- check out swim course.
Swim
  • 30m 5s
  • 750 meters
  • 04m 01s / 100 meters
Comments:

This is my third tri with this wetsuit -- don't have good range of motion through the arms and it seems that I'm fighting the suit -- wears me out more than the swim does. Does make me float though...
What would you do differently?:

Dunno yet. Think I'll give the swim at Maumee next week another try and just relax more.
Transition 1
  • 03m 40s
Comments:

Did okay coming up the hill into the transition area -- no stones and not much of a crowd this year. Top half of my wetsuit came off okay -- still did a little dance trying to get the bottom half off though.
What would you do differently?:

Kyle said to try spray PAM -- will give that a go next week. Overall, transition times improved by almost 2 minutes over my last race.
Bike
  • 55m 21s
  • 22 kms
  • 23.85 km/hr
Comments:

I was pretty pleased -- one "thank you Jesus" hill on the last 1/3 of the segment that found a couple of people walking -- I rode it (thanks to training on the Hamilton Hills from Hell -- was very much like the Keiver hill)
What would you do differently?:

Am going to aim for a 14 mile/min pace next week.
Transition 2
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

Pulled my groin getting off the bike -- was okay, just slowed me down. Girl in the tranistion area next to me had her stuff spread out -- had to wait for her to move to get my bike racked.
What would you do differently?:

Just put my bike anywhere and get on with it.... stretch more before race.
Run
  • 41m 17s
  • 5 kms
  • 08m 16s  min/km
Comments:

I didn't like the grassy segment -- twisted my ankle just before hitting the levy and ended up walking most of the course (41:17 -- ugh). Still pretty happy overall.
What would you do differently?:

Train to run on grass.
Post race
Warm down:

Missed having a hose available to rinse down after the race and so headed for the bathrooms. Really liked the watermellon -- at the Caesars Creek tri last year, HFP provided some frozen popcycles that were terrific. Would like to see more of those at the races.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to look at different wetsuit -- maybe a sleeveless one as I spent too much energy just trying to move in mine (too binding). I'm going to try to relax in the swim next time and try to get my overall time down to 1/2 hour (if I can do 750m in the pool in 20 minutes, I should be able to do a lake swim in 30). As I dismounted the bike in transition, I pulled my groin -- dumb. Was thinking about the swim I'm sure and so again, relax. The transition from bike to run was okay, but I twisted my ankle running on the grassy segment. All in all, I think I just needed to zone out and not worry about the race.

Event comments:

The course was not marked well -- the first exit out of the transition area was not marked sprint vs international (true throughout the race). Volunteers not well coordinated. Little or no music played before the race started -- names not called out as finishers completed. Clock was down at the finish. I've only run 2 triathlons: 2005 Caesar Creek and Buck Creek. Both were high energy and had a lot of support. This race didn't have the same energy -- I was surprised the difference that made. I'm looking forward to Maumee Bay next week.
