![]() Swim
Comments: Good swim. Poor sighting and I stopped a couple of times when I ran into people instead of swimming over them. Started easy and smooth and then gradually built up the pace. Felt like I was flying through the last half of the swim course. Sighted like shit...though I wish they had more buoys out there when there's that much chop. Water was 68, but I tell ya...it felt awesome. Had that vertigo feeling after getting out of the water from my swim warmup which got me ready for how I felt after the swim. What would you do differently?: Go harder. No mercy on the swim. Sounds harsh, but if they're out there in the front of the pack, they can deal with it. :) My time includes a lengthy run from the beach - I forget where the mat was but easily another 30 secs of running up the beach and winding through some wooden entryway back and forth. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: This race was a funky one...it went 750m swim, 4 mile bike, 2 mile run, 4 mile bike, 1 mile run. So....they didn't keep track of transition times. I think T1 is with bike 1 and T2 is with run 1 and T3 is with bike 2 and T4 is with run 2. My approach was to keep it as simple as possible. The total bike distance was 8 miles, so I wasn't going to carry a ton of hydration with me. Wetsuit came off ok. Nothing stellar, but not bad either. Put shoes on, helmet, sunglasses (to keep out the rain). What would you do differently?: Must learn to jump on bike...I'm too scared that I'll wipe out. Must practice this. ![]() Bike
Comments: Ok...the pace above includes transition times. If you take off just 2 mins from that, I'm averaging 21 mph. I felt like I was hauling ass on this course and yet I'm still passed by these cyclemanaics that literally blow the freak right past me. Holy hell. It was seriously pouring down rain during both bike legs. I was very nervous about the rear wheel sliding out from under me since I chose to have a slick tread put on the disc. Didn't have any issues. 1st bike was in 12:26 and I was 58 out of 162 2nd bike was in 11:58 and I was 94 out of 162?? WTH is up with that? maybe its transition related What would you do differently?: I need to become a cyclemaniac and blow the hell past people. Seriously though - probably from a mph standpoint I was having a great performance. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: See T1 comments. Normally I come hauling in standing on one pedal and take off running at the dismount line. I could only do this for the last bike to run transition and even then, the rain/slick roads had me playing it a little cautious. ![]() Run
Comments: At the start of each run leg, I'd exit T-area and there would my boy Nick handing out water. He was soaking wet and cold, but I took strength in seeing him each time. Didn't see Denise, Sam, and Emma until the 2nd run. Apparently they were the turnaround police. Emma looked MISERABLE - like a little drowned rat. Sam looked cold and Denise looked like she'd rather be out racing this race instead of volunteering for it (but she was happy to get a free T-shirt) The beach run was fun and sucked at the same time. Went sockless the whole race hoping to shave off some time from transition. Feet felt good the whole way. Ran on the most packed sand I could find. It was slower, but I felt really good off the bike each leg. I clocked my first 2 miles at 15.17 and my last mile at 6:55. Transition times are included in the time above. Really happy with my run...the first two miles were a little slower than I would have liked, but I maintained form and I think the sand slowed me more than anything. The 2nd run I hauled ass and felt awesome - though winded. What would you do differently?: Keep getting faster. :) ![]() Post race
Warm down: LOL! Normally I say cool down here. In this case I was soaking wet from the rain and felt pretty damn good. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bike and run. Must get faster. I'm doing better on the run - just keep struggling on the bike. Travel lifestyle is tough especially when it comes to bike training, but I've got to somehow find a way to make this happen. Coach didn't have me taper for this race - it was more of a tough training session, so that could have affected things a little bit, but not too much. Event comments: This is a great race for someone looking for a short distance tri that's a little less than a full sprint tri. Its the perfect opportunity to practice transitions as well since you get 4 of them. Right before the swim Chris Hughes came up and said hi. GRATS CHRIS! GREAT RACE BRO! Raced in my BT 1 piece trisuit...first time I ever have done a one piece. The zipper was evil against my neck, but the rest of it was wicked comfortable (and I looked good too) heh heh. Nothing special. Had a few Nutterbutter cookies about 2 hours pre-race. It was a short race, so I didn't worry too much about nutrition. Slept great, hydrated well, took 2 enduralytes before bed, and two 30 mins before race start.
Reverse order warmup. 3/4 mile easy run, 3.5 mile easy bike, 5 min swim with drills in the ocean to get used to the waves.
Rain started falling 30 mins before race start!
