Pre-race routine:

Drove to the park on Friday, set up camp then went to packet pickup. Had the ART Dr. work on my knee. Had the bike mechanic fix my rear cog problem. Met up with the Pauley family and rode rides that eve - there were no lines - it was crazy nice :). Up early Saturday morn to volunteer at the aid station but the rain throughout the night caused the tri's to be changed to runs only, so time of volunteering was short. Back to camper for breakfast, chilled then took a run to the beach so I knew the way come Sunday morn. Ran back then got wetsuit and walked back to beach for quick swim. Chilled some more then got bike organized for check-in. Took bike right before required athlete meeting at 4:00. Had ART Dr. work on back. Spent the rest of the eve organizing gear and visiting friends.
Event warmup:

Woke up before alarm and drove car to transition. Got bike uncovered and T set up. Rode my old road bike back to camp as I wanted to have my car at the race site for afterwards. Ate breakfast (steel cut oats, yogurt with chia seeds/granola, part of a bagel w/PB and a banana) and actually slept for half an hour. 45 minutes before my wave I put on my wetsuit, some throw-away socks and walked to the beach (about 15 minutes) as the maintenance people of the park looked at me funny. Chatted with some ladies then got in the water at 8:50 and made sure goggles were on tight and did a quick few strokes.

Started out nice and slow on the inside as I noticed most ladies chose to go outside. No problem sighting or getting hit too often. I was in the last wave. The problem began about 8 minutes into the swim where I started getting light-headed and realized I had some motion sickness from the waves. This was my first large body water swim so it was not a feeling I'd experienced before. I didn't see a single rescue person heading to the first buoy so I had a bit of panic. Realized I needed to quickly turn my mind on something else or I was in trouble. I started praying for my family and anybody I could think of and tried to block the sick feeling from my head. This was the first tri swim I'd ever done where I wanted to quit in the middle of it. I remember thinking that I bet it took me 1 hour to swim that distance so I was surprised when I saw 47 minutes on my watch when I happily exited the water.
What would you do differently?:

Never do another large body swim again. Ever. Too scary and not necessary.

What would you do differently?:

If I'd known I would end the day with a PR after starting out like I did, then I would've raced transitions.

An uneventful ride with the exception of dropping my water bottle and having to turn around and go back for it. I wanted to pace this portion better and do better with nutrition than my last couple 70.3s. I passed everyone I came upon and the only people who passed me were the ones doing the Full - go figure. I was cruising along thinking pretty highly of myself when another 53 year old woman flew by me as if I was standing still and she had an "F" on her calf for FULL and she was on her second lap. That was quite humbling.
What would you do differently?:

When I see my avg miles per hour I'm a bit disappointed because I thought I'd do better than that. But if I'd pushed it more, would I have had the same run? Who knows and who cares. :)

My mind bogged down at this point. I wasn't sure how I would be doing nutrition wise so I'd laid out a few options when I'd set up that morn. I sat there looking at everything and couldn't decide if I wanted any of it. I opted to leave it all there except for my gum and eat/drink off the course.
What would you do differently?:

I should've already made my decision in the last couple miles of the bike and thought through what T2 would look like. I do that at every other tri but blew it at this one.

I really wanted to run for the majority of the time and I accomplished that, unlike my other 70.3s. One AGer passed me by right out of T2 and I could tell I wouldn't see her again. I saw Dirk heading to the finish on my first stretch and he was flying. That was a happy moment. Grabbed pretzels at the first aid station and munched on them until the second one. Put ice down my sports bra. Although it wasn't hot, the course was open to the sun and I wanted to make sure I stayed as cool as possible. My mind wanted to stop and I did a couple times but realized I would hate myself if I didn't pick it back up. I ended up adopting a fan club - a group of 6 young people cheering for someone ahead of me but they kept popping up at random corners and they'd yell my name and encouragements. I had a good time with them and they kept me engaged in the race. I kept a smile the whole time because at this point I was truly full of joy knowing I'd finish in much better condition than two weeks ago. I took in one GU but it sent me gagging so I knew I couldn't get another down. I drank water for the most part but some coke toward the end. I ate part of a banana and trail mix too. I finished happy.
What would you do differently?:

Get more run fitness in. It was lacking this year due to knee problems with my new tri bike fitting.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the finish line seeing the Pauley family who made me smile. For some reason I headed straight for the ART tent to have my shoulders/neck looked at. It could've waited but I wasn't thinking straight. Felt much better after that. The Pauley's helped me get my finish time and splits from the computers that were set up and then we said goodbyes. Dirk had finished in spectacular fashion and even though I told them not to wait around for me, they did and that touched my heart. I got some food to eat because it sounded good but it didn't taste good so I packed up my car and headed back to the campground for some R&R before heading home. After being a bit nautious I didn't want to drive the 4 hours home and ended up staying another night.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me, myself and I. This was my 4th 70.3 and I set a PR by 7 minutes. My first 70.3 was 6:19 then 6:39, 6:49 two weeks ago (boy I liked ending in "9"s) and this one at 6:12. I don't have plans to put another 70.3 on my calendar for next year but you never know. :)

Event comments:

Rev3 is definitely a family friendly race. I thought packet pickup could've been streamlined a little better with our numbers already in our packet because it took a long time for the various ladies to go through all the numbers and find each one. Having the ART Dr's available to us was simply amazing along with the bike mechanics and muscle milk! All in all a very nice venue that I'd recommend.
