Total Time = 6h 29m 44s
Overall Rank = 483/706
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 25/42
Pre-race routine:

Nothing special. Got up about 5:30, had my apple and peanut butter and headed down to transition to set up. Got everything squared away and made the trek to the swim start, munching on my hard-boiled eggs and bagel.
Event warmup:

None. (see below)
Swim
  • 42m 25s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

4-5' waves and rip current warnings meant we couldn't swim in Lake Erie. The good news is that this race venue affords a secondary swim course in the Sandusky Bay. The bad news again is that it is a full 1/2 mile from the swim course to T1. They had a section all set up by race # to put running shoes if you so desired, but I ran barefoot.

They also switched from straight mass wave starts to a wave+TT start. We went in sets of 2 every 3 seconds. I LOVED the TT start!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. This was a pretty solid swim for me, especially considering my swim workouts have been limited this summer.
Transition 1
  • 08m 35s
Comments:

They had wetsuit strippers! They were awesome!!!
Of course, this T1 time is crazy long because it includes the 1/2-mile run from the swim course to transition. I also took my time putting on my socks to make sure they weren't bunched up and stuffed all my nutrition in my pockets.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I think doing the barefoot thing was the way to go. I did not want to have to mess with finding and tying my shoes just to get to T1. Also, that would have made for some soggy shoes on the run. That being said, it did beat up my feet a bit walking barefoot to the swim start, standing around for an hour and then running back to transition after the swim. That being said, I forgot all about the sore feet, pretty much the minute I got on the bike.

Comments:

I just can't put into words how much wind was a factor. The third picture I attached shows my hair practically standing on end, that's how windy it was. We had crosswinds/tailwinds for nearly 40 miles of the bike. We were all shot by the end of the bike. One of our local tri club all stars (a guy who can regularly hold 28-30 mph) was going 13 mph at one point.

I also forced myself to eat and drink at very regular intervals, which is not something I do on a regular training ride. Also had to make a brief stop at the port-o-potty about 10 miles in. This dinged my time a bit - the Garmin had my avg at 18.3 mph, but it was a necessary stop so I'm not terribly concerned with the lost time.
What would you do differently?:

Not much to be done about the wind. I was in aero as much as possible, and just pedaled like a mad woman.
Transition 2
  • 03m 9s
Comments:

Again, took my time in T2, just to make sure things were on straight and shoes were tied tight.
What would you do differently?:

Again, not much. I'm sure this could have been a good minute faster, but needed to be certain that I was all set to run 13 miles, pretty much non-stop.
Run
  • 2h 30m 8s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

The sun stayed behind the clouds until about mile 10, at which point it got a little warm. I also made a quick stop at the port-o-potty at about the 2.5 mile mark. I stopped twice on the run course to refill my water bottle, but aside from those three pit-stops, I was running the whole time. Again these each took a little time off, but were necessary stops. The Garmin had me clocking 11:11 miles.

It also became really tough to force the gels down later in the run. I swear if I see another gel packet any time soon, I'll puke.
What would you do differently?:

This was a very solid run for me. I actually tried to speed up a little the last mile or so and couldn't. My legs just wouldn't go any faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Limped around and waited for a couple of friends to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pure physical ability. I left everything I had out on that course. My body is sore today, I have little doubt that this was the best race, given the course and the conditions that I could have raced.

Event comments:

Rev puts on a pretty darn good race. Everything was well-organized, well-staffed and well-run. They handled the switch in the swim course without a hitch. The only gripe I have is the post-race food, which is notoriously crappy at this race. Not Rev's fault in the least, as they have to coordinate with Cedar Point's catering department, which SUCKS! We had crappy pasta salad, Doritos and tacos - who the hell serves tacos after a triathlon!?!

Course: Pancake flat course, except for one decent hill, that loops through the city. Not the most scenic course but it had a bunch of out and backs which was nice for two reasons. The first was that each out and back was about a mile, so it was easy to mentally tick those miles off. The other reason was because I got to see my tri friends running past me numerous times, shouting cheers and encouragement each time.
