Swim
Comments: I suck at swimming, but this was bad even for me. I am typically around 27 minutes for an Olympic swim, so given lack of training I got what I deserved here. I navigated poorly and never really got in a good rhythm. I've heard the swim was a bit long, so that adds to the slower time. On the plus side I didn't really feel too trashed coming out of the water so at least I didn't overwork it. What would you do differently?: Train Transition 1
Comments: Big transition area so my time was slow, but things went pretty smoothly. Nothing I'd really say cost me much time. What would you do differently?: Hustle a little more Bike
Comments: Pretty decent effort given lack of training. I probably overcooked the first 4 or 5 miles and that cost me a bit on the closing miles. I passed a lot of people so that's always a boost mentally. The bridge climbs really weren't as bad as I was expecting them to be, I was able to pretty much cruise up them without too much trouble. Beyond that nothing too eventful here. What would you do differently?: Train Transition 2
Comments: Made a little bit of a mess of this...I ran past my spot in transition, and it took me a good 30 seconds to find my spot and rack my bike. What would you do differently?: Not run past my spot Run
Comments: Given I've actually been doing some decent running, this was most disappointing for me. I just could not get my legs turning over. My heartrate was not that high, so I had plaenty in the tank as far as that goes. But it is what it is, and I made the most of what I could do. Thankfully there was a little cloud cover later in the run that cooled things off. I finished pretty strong and got my medal from Chrissy Wellington! What would you do differently?: Run faster Post race
Warm down: Chugged a water and gatorade, then found my wife, packed up transition when it opened, and headed back to the car for the 45 min drive to her family's. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training Event comments: Great organization for the most part, but my wave started 18 minutes later than planned. So I've been pretty disinterested in training lately, but I signed up for this race a long time ago, so I figured I might as well do it. My wife has family near Milwaukee anyway, so we figured we'd make a visit out of it at least. I usually get pretty excited about racing and love to train, but it just hasn't been that way this year for whatever reason. I'd say I've swam a total of 2 times and biked maybe 5 times over the past month. I have at least been doing a decent amount of running, so I was expecting to at least run decent in this race. We got into town around 3 on Friday and headed straight for packet pickup and bike check. Everything was very well organized and it really didn't take long at all. It definitely put me in a better mindset going into the race. We checked into the hotel and then grabbed dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. Big mistake, I ate waaaaay too much and felt pretty oogy the rest of the night. We watched some of the Packers game (in Spanish because it was blacked out in English for some reason), then got to bed around 9:30. Up at 5:45 to get transition situated, and I decided after the heavy meal last night that I didn't really feel like eating anything, so I went all liquid until after the race. My wave was scheduled for 9:30 and didn't actually go off until 9:48, so we walked to a coffee shop about half a mile away so my wife could have coffee and to sit for a while. Made it back around 9am and waited for my wave to start.
Hopped in the water and swam and treaded for a while.
