Swim
Comments: Pace was 1:55 which is good for me this year. I was still way behind. Water exit was up a ramp, you never touched the bottom but they had plenty of volunteers passing you along so it was not an issue. What would you do differently?: Matches my best swim of the year so satisfied even tho it's not a great time. Transition 1
Comments: 22/122 in AG, 906/2677 overall What would you do differently?: Not much, decent transition Bike
Comments: I went hard on the bike and had my best pace of the year. I only got passed once by a female just past the 2nd turn around. I kept her in sight but could not keep up with her. Transition 2
Comments: 45/122 in AG, 1388/2677 overall. I decided to wear socks and hada little trouble with right sock, it went on crooked but didn't affect the run at all. Run
Comments: I had an optimistic goal of averaging sub &;00s like I did in my earlier Olys but with reduced training and getting sick between Chisago and Milwaukee it wasn't going to happen. I did pick off a few guys in my AG, only got passed by 2-3 guys and one chick. I caught up to David Swanson who I ran with at Buffalo Oly a few years ago ( and beat at the end). Here I could not out kick him and he beat me by 1.23 seconds. What would you do differently?: Be better trained and fully ready in all disciplines. Post race
Warm down: I got a a finisher medal but only imn my hand. Then Chrissie Wellington was there wanting to put one around my neck, so I let her (FOR SURE!!). I gave the other one to a different volunteer. Very COOL to have Chrissie doing medals. Found Barb and then had almost a 2 hour wait to get into transition. Changed out of tri suit, got some food. They had limited drinks but we had some of our own. What limited your ability to perform faster: The 2 weeks between Chisago HIM and Nationals were not ideal. I had a cold after Chisago, lots of congestion and stayed in bed most of one day. Quality training was limited and I didn't start with the base I've had the last couple of years. Basically I am not training as much this year as in recent years, especially into the summer. By choice. Golfing and working at the bike shop are taking time. Regardless, a PR would have got me only up to 40th place I would have needed to beat my PR by 4:30 to qualify make top 25 and worlds was top 18 dropping down to 25 so I may still have not made it. There were wicked fast people in all AG at this race. Greg Taylor was "only" 3rd in our AG, altho he is 59. Mark Carey was 5th in his AG, too bad we didn't know we were both going to be in Milwaukee. However, If I had done Duathlon Worlds, I would have been top 20 in my AG based on Larry S time who was 17th. Get rid of the swim and I can compete. Event comments: It was fun and humbling to compete at a race of this magnitude. Definitely the truism, that there is always someone faster than you rang true in Milwaukee. Drove to Milwaukee on Thu, arriving about 6:30 pm. Found hotel but did not find race venue till Fri. Bike check in, packet pick up on Fri. We were about 10-12 minute walk from transition/expo. Saw Chrissie Wellington at the kids race on Fri afternoon. Got some pics.
Could not take bike out of transition, so just did a run warm up. They also limited what you took into transition, clear bag provided by them, no back packs. Each gender AG had their own wave separated by at least 7 minutes, sometimes 20 minutes. Start was delayed by 15 minutes due to traffic issues, we actually rode on an interstate. Got a swim warm as they let our wave into the starting area.
