Swim
Comments: Water was murky and field very packed--twice as many people this year as last, at least. Got kicked, punched, clawed (nearly lost my chip!). Very difficult to establish a rhythm. What would you do differently?: At my speed, there's not much I can do. I can't swim ahead, and if I swam behind I'd lose too much time. Transition 1
Comments: Ran up the beach but walked from timing mat to bike--I wanted to get my HR down (it was 183 when I exited the water). What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: This was my first race on my TT bike, and I'm still uncertain about gear ratios. I also didn't have enough fluid. i filled my Aerodrink bottle, thinking that would be enough, but in this heat I ran out before the turnaround. I also didn't take any Gel--should have, given what happened on the run. I should have gone around that girl at the turnaround. She hesitated, then clipped out one one side, clipped in again, then clipped out on the other side. I didn't know if it was legal to pass her there, so I ended up having to clip out, too. I lost about 15 seconds at least. The last hill up the dam nearly killed me. i was gasping for breath at the top--if I didn't think I would have crashed, i would have clipped out and walked. I really thought I was going to have a heart attack because I couldn't get my breath back for so long afterward. (My max HR I *though* was 196, but I hit 198 during the ride, so I guess I have a new Max HR!) It left me really down for the run. What would you do differently?: I was disappointed that I wasn't that much faster than last year, given the new bike. I need to ride more. Transition 2
What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Abysmal! On the one hand, I was glad just to cross the finish line--I wanted to quit after the bike leg, but I've never quit a race--but I was disappointed not to improve on last year's time. Given the fact that I walked so much (last year I didn't walk at all), I guess I should be happy the time is as good as it is! What would you do differently?: Train more in the heat, and do bricks that specificially include the steepeest, most hellacious hills around! Post race
Warm down: Walked. Ate an orange slice and drank water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat; lack of hill training. Event comments: The race was good--very challenging--just too challenging for me! Last updated: 2006-07-10 12:00 AM

Ate a Cliff Bar for breakfast. I probably should have had more calories, but...
Got to Sandy Beach--almost couldn't find a parking place--and searched out a space for my bike on the full racks. Set out my gear, then went to get marked and pick up my chip.
Swam a bit to get a feel for water conditions.
