Swim
Comments: Start was in deep water with everyone shoulder to shoulder holding onto dock with one hand. Fair start, but I had to hold up a few seconds because I got blocked by those that pushed off faster. I think there was a current pushing us for the first half, but after turns to head for exit, had to swim against the current. It was crowded and I had plenty of bumping and grabbing from other swimmers. Although it didn't really bother me, it did cause me to have to adjust my swim path or lose a bit of momentum. Steep ramp exit with some assist from volunteers. I had predicted a 30 min swim so I was pleased when I hit that goal. I was not tired after the swim and felt ready to bike. What would you do differently?: Push off faster and harder so I don't get caught behind others. There wasn't much I could do about the crowding and bumping, but maybe there's a way to better avoid it - not sure. Transition 1
Comments: I covered almost 1/4 mile between run from swim to transition and then from rack to bike out - I was very close to swim in, so had a long run with bike to bike out. Wetsuit was halfway off as were cap and goggles by the time I got to my bike. Got wetsuit off pretty quickly and put on everything as quickly as I could. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: In order to make sure I didn't have reflux issues, I took tums when I started and about very 20 minutes since I had hints of the reflux starting. I felt strong on the climbs and passed people when climbing, but am still relatively slow compared to so many others - still need to work on being able to maintain a faster speed for this distance. I hit my brakes on the way down from the bridge since I felt as if the wind might blow me over. I was not in aero bars on way down so I felt more in control of bike. Overall, I felt good, but not fantastic. What would you do differently?: Need to get more comfortable going downhill with cross wind at high speeds - not easy to practice. I was aero for a good part of the ride, but there were parts when I probably should have been on aero bars, but wasn't. Need to more work on longer distances at faster speeds. Transition 2
Comments: Short run from entrance to transition to rack. Bike shoes off, running sneaks on and knee brace on. Grabbed everything else and put them on as I was doing long run to run out. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Probably started out a little too fast since after the first 2 miles, I had to slow down and even walked through mile 3 and 4 aid stations to drink water (even though I was carrying Infinit run formula with me). I felt better after mile 4 and was able to pick up the pace for the last 1/3 of the run. Took off sunglasses part of the way through since they were getting fogged and hard to see through. What would you do differently?: Try to run a more evenly paced run or even negative split. Leave behind sunglasses. Post race
Warm down: Drank bottle of water, walked to RaceDay Transport relaxation area, wiped down with cool towel and wipes and relaxed with recovery "boots" (full leg) for 20 minutes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Swim still needs work to get a little faster so I am more in it from the start. Bike at this distance definitely needs work - need to be able to go faster longer and still have a good run. Event comments: I still have work to do at this distance. I was pleased with my times, but was about 3 minutes slower than last year. Although I definitely felt better on the bike this year than last year, I believe the stronger headwind slowed me down. On the run, I might have been able to push through the middle tough miles, but since I was racing the Sprint on Sunday, I wanted to be a little conservative. I was pleased with placing just below mid-pack both in age group and overall, given that the best in the country were racing her (and had to qualify to do so). The race is extremely well organized with plenty of volunteers. The waves start on time and the course is closed to traffic and clearly marked. I hope to qualify again next year and race in both events again. Last updated: 2015-01-07 12:00 AM

Transition opened at 5:30. Arrived about 5:45, set up transition, returned to car for drinks, returned to transition to fill aero bottle and leave run bottles in fuel belt and extra bottle of water on transition mat.
Consumed 1 BioTrust Oatmeal cookie about 1 1/2 hours prior to my start time and then 16 oz. Ucan just before leaving car (about 1 hour prior to start time).
Returned to car and rested in car until about 1 hour before race start.
In water, about 15 minutes prior to start time - swam about 100 meters (guessing) to get warmed-up.
