Pre-race routine:

Usual morning breakfast. Little lighter in calories since a short sprint event.

Event warmup:

I got to site a little late to get into the pool (which was a zoo of people anyway) - So, I did strides and ran outside; worked up a warmth, took off warm ups, down to bare feet and ran to the pool to wait for start.
Swim
  • 07m 50s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

I seeded myself somewhere between 6.30 and 7 minutes. People were sent into pool 5 or so seconds apart. Not everything goes as planned and people get log jammed in traffic. I actually had to STOP to adjust, wait, re start in the middle of the pool. That backed up my time and it was so annoying, killed a rhythm, then I got passed eventually by 2 people. I passed about 4 or 5 as well.
What would you do differently?:

Get in an ocean or lake. I found pool swim terribly annoying
Transition 1
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

This was a climb out of pool, run up baby grassy hill up and over into transition about 300 meters away. I didn't sprint it, but I wasn't exactly walking
What would you do differently?:

Not much, thought I handled it well. It was just about 50 degrees at race time. I had a pearl izumi jacket ready for the bike, but I felt warm enough that I threw a run beanie on before my helmet and socks. Other than that, a baby sip of my mix and off I went
Bike
  • 14m 9s
  • 6 miles
  • 25.44 mile/hr
Comments:

I had put the GT Jammer aero bars on the day before and tested them out to my liking. On this course I got into them as quickly as possible and went at it. I really felt the difference on them on this flat loop course. I passed tons of people and dropped into drops and took turns hard.
What would you do differently?:

Not assess the 1st loop, just go out hard immediately. Create my own paths, don't adjust to other people (especially ones not moving well, or staying to right) I slowed a few times to handle these "situations" Be even more aggressive
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

I keep feet in shoes and unclip and hop off while entering dismount area. Quick swig of my mix and a GU for the hell of it and into shoes and run out
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 13m 56s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

I still feel heavy coming off the bike. The way I ride, my legs, which are above your average muscularity for triathlete standards, get crazy pumped. Takes a while to feel "lighter" and "looser"
What would you do differently?:

Work more in training to make bike to run less difficult. It'll come over time.

I know I can be faster in final runs
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Traffic in pool - still dealing with heavy legs off bike

Event comments:

The only thing that stops me from giving a 5 is my hatred for the mass pool swims.

*Technically, this was my first official triathlon. Having been doing enough du/biath/aqua dual events, I have been ready. I am happy, but feel like I can and should get better. Racing swims makes my enjoyment of swimming drop big time. I can LOVE swimming if I am not so concerened for my pace....people messing with my pace....worrying about my pace.....asking myself a million questions while swimming, wondering if Im going too hard, am I wasting energy, etc etc. The swims are such a frikn mental mind fk
