Pre-race routine:

Got to Williamsburg Friday evening. It was fairly late because of work issues, but we got toThe Cedars and got in our room pretty easily. Lovely rooms in this bed and breakfast, this one was in the carriage house behind the main house and we had windows on every side. Tossed and turned a lot.We had breakfast on Saturday then headed over to the park for the pre swim.
Pre swim was interesting at best. It was low tide and my hands touched bottom for nearly the entire distance.
Packet pick up...got transferred to the aqua bike division. After my last injury in February I had rebuilt the run up to about 3 1/2 -4 miles, but honestly I just don't want to run anymore. Seems like my legs just don't like it and that's the sport I have been injured in every time. Anyway, I set up my transition spot then went to the pre race meeting. Melanie and her friend LT sat near us. After the meeting my husband and I drove the bike course--seems like a loot of the Cap2Cap routs on the Chickahominy end. I remembered the roads from that event. Grabbed a late lunch and hung out in our room for a bit before walking into Colonial Williamsburg for dinner.
Sunday morning the alarm went off at 4:30. I waited until my husband was almost done in the bathroom to get moving. Heck, no sense showering and putting on fresh deodorant when I'm going to be in the river in a little while. Made a comment about getting on with the shyte show and got moving towards the tri suit.
We stopped at a convenience store for breakfast--pretty nasty but that's all that is open at 5AM. I ate on the way over to the park. Had my coffee....
We arrived before a lot of other people, had a good parking spot. By the time I walked over to fill my bottles and check my tires you could see the influx of traffic to park.
I walked around transition making sure of where i was to enter from the swim and how far down my rack was...Walked over to the river edge and just hung out. My wave started at 7:55 AM, I had over 90 minutes of waiting.
Event warmup:

Meh, I got in the river about 5 minutes before my wave went off, mostly cause there were no portapotties near the swim start and well, the coffee needed to go.

Okay, I have done two real swim workouts in the past three months. One was a week ago, when I did a straight 1500 to make sure I could do it without dying and the other was the pre swim yesterday. Can we just lay it out here that I hate swimming with a passion and had NO expectations of my swim. So why was my time so good?
Hah!! The secret to a good swim time is having a race director who starts the race at high tide and by the time my wave gets out there we have a nice current pushing us in.
I swam straight on for the first two sighting buoys, then started to get pushed into shore, the kayaker redirected me over to the red buoy, maybe 200 feet to the wrong side.Did just enough side stroking to cross that current over to the buoy then right back at it.
The long leg of the swim was well aided by the current pushing me, but the bright sun as I breathed toward my left was tough to navigate. I had to pause my stroke a few split seconds just to get my bearings on the buoy line.
Made the final turn, it looked like there weren't too many people in the water when I exited, and I really thought my split was going to be closer to 40 minutes cause that is what I usually do....swam right up to the exit ramp and looked at the Garmin. HOLY H#LL, over a 9 minute PR. Thank you Jay Peluso!!
What would you do differently?:

Maybe actually work on swimming but hey, this is supposed to be my final race, I don't HAVE to swim anymore!!

Into transition I ran with a huge smile...found Lola on the rack. Got my bike shoes, helmet and sunglasses on and ran out of transition.

Part of the Cap2Cap course. Out the park and right over the bridge, Route 5 to some little country road that we were on FOREVER. Had some little rollers, the second of which was harder for me but I think it's cause I had to stay back from the guy in front of me to avoid drafting. Most of the potholes were well marked, but of course I found the ones that weren't.Passed some little country church and I saw some women going in asked them to pray for the racers, ....little foreshadowing here...
Eventually made it to the split where the HIM goes right to go farther out into Charles City and the Oly goes left to get back towards route 5. I made that turn fairly easily and was going at a decent clip on 5 when I could see the traffic ahead of me at a complete stop. Wasn't too sure how I should navigate this scenario. Decided that I should go out around it, but that turned out to be difficult cause then the officer directing the traffic waved the cars on and they ware all cutting out to where I was. THEN, I saw the reason for the traffic stoppage. At least five cyclists, one face down on the pavement. The others seated around her. Lots of bike carnage. Since there was a police officer manning traffic, i knew the EMS team was on the way and I would only be one more person in the way of things so I kept going and said my own prayers for the cyclist.
Seemed like those last few miles after the accident went slower for me, not sure if I rode more cautiously and slowly or if my butt was just sore from being in the saddle....Had to ride up that bridge just before the final turn into the park and really had nothing in the tank for that incline.
What would you do differently?:

Ride my bike more, LOTS more.
Work life balance is NOT in balance these days, hard to get out after work for a ride and I hate the trainer when the weather is nice, bad enough when the weather is miserable.

Post race
Warm down:

Well, I danced out of T2, then couldn't figure out where to go to turn in my chip so I ALMOST started the run barefooted....walked back over and asked where to turn in my chip and the guy on the golf cart took it. Walked out of transition and found my husband and one of my coworkers who drove up from Hampton Roads to see me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training. My work life balance is non existent and my training has tanked,

Is this my final swan song in multipart?

There are 8 of us in the Aquabike division that Rev3 lost the bike splits on. I am guessing at my time based off what my swim was and my total time.
