Pre-race routine:

Drank a latte in the car, chatted w/DH, ate a banana and premium bar. Got marked, found my rack, pulled out essentials but couldn't find chip.Got into wetsuit after lubing. Finally found chip after nearly panicking and got to water's edge. Went back to get body-glide for additional application to shoulders. Talked to kiddos, got wedding ring from DH, helped DD find dad in swim wave so she could take pix, got in water to warmup.
Event warmup:

Swam a few yards to get used to water, then talked with other novice women. Swam out to front of pack to start race.
Swim
  • 08m 30s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started at the front. Good choice. Asparated water then felt like I was being strangled by the wetsuit. Tried loosening the neck at the first buoy, helped a tiny bit. Couldn't alt. breathe, had to breathe every breath which meant I never did get a good rythm. I was glad the swim was only 1/4 mile, tho I may have found my rythm on a longer swim.
What would you do differently?:

Try a diff. style wetsuit, practice OW/pool swim in wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 05m 28s
Comments:

Disoriented and winded after run uphill to T1. Fell while trying to get suit off. Grass stuck between toes so took too long to get shoes on. Put on helmet and sunglasses then attempted to run bike out. Heartrate way too high, so walked to bike mount.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a stool or bucket to sit on.
Bike
  • 43m 25s
  • 12 miles
  • 16.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Spent first mile getting heartrate down. Then picked up the pace. Good ride until mile 6 when my left knee started to hurt. Windy w/cross winds and spitting rain.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 03m 25s
Comments:

Tried to run in. Racked bike, swithched shoes, grabbed a gulp of drink. Took time to stretch hamstrings. Good choice. Ran out of area.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not stretch???
Run
  • 38m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Took 1/4 mile to overcome brick legs. Ran more than walked, but pace very slow. Rt. knee began to hurt on downhill sections, so ended up walking up and down hills, and only running on level ground. Did alot of talking to myself to get thru the run. Very glad to see mile 2 marker! Extremely glad to see finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Train w/longer runs.
Post race
Warm down:

Chiropractic adjustment.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim panic and knee problems on bike and run.

Event comments:

Well organized race. Would like to try the Aug. race just to try the swim w/out wetsuit.
