Overall Rank = 131/606
Age Group = 40-45
Age Group Rank = 21/59
Pre-race routine:

I got up early after sleeping like crap. Had a yogurt and some toast with peanut butter for breakfast. Got there pretty early, parking was no problem. I wanted to go for a ride, but the racks were already filling up so I just racked my bike.
Event warmup:

Saw Bryce there and we went for a real easy 10 minute jog. I warmed up pretty quick and felt good. Before my swim I went in the water, got used to the cold and it wasn't an issue when the race started.
Swim
  • 15m
  • 750 meters
  • 02m / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was good. I did a bit of drafting, but just couldn't see anyone that well, or hang with the ones I could see. I tried to catch some waves, but just couldn't get any.
What would you do differently?:

Just train more so I can swim faster. I think I want to get a smaller wetsuit too, and a full instead of the long john.
Transition 1
  • 03m 1s
Comments:

The first transition is long, but it includes a 100 yard uphill climb to the parking lot in that time, so it's kind of hard to say how quick the actual transition part was.
What would you do differently?:

Use my foot bath instead of a jug of water to clean my feet.
Bike
  • 33m 38s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 22.17 mile/hr
Comments:

I rode hard and stuck with 2 guys the whole race. I'm pleased with my average speed and time. Can't say I'd do much different in this area. Not one person passed me on the bike leg.
Transition 2
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

T2 was fine, it was kind of tough getting my socks on my sweaty feet.
What would you do differently?:

I guess if anything maybe I'll try running without socks to speed up the transition.
Run
  • 24m 31s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

I was out of breath starting the run. I felt like throwing up for at least a mile. My left leg felt like it was going to cramp, but never did. Legs felt like lead for at least 1 1/2 miles.

Eventually I worked into feeling better by the second lap. Started to pick up the pace. On the last 1/2 of the second lap I felt much better and tried to pick up the pace as much as I could. I watched the legs of anyone passing me. There were 5 guys in my age group that passed me on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Do more bike/run bricks. Train more runs.
Post race
Warm down:

Gasped for air while shoveling cookies, bananas, grapes and water into my mouth! :) That's only a slight exageration.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Really just the run today. I actually had a PR 5k run on this same course earlier in the week, but just didn't have it after that hard bike effort.

Event comments:

Will do every year I hope.
