Swim
Comments: Lake Van is a very small lake that is about 5 feet deep at it's deepest. This race goes out in waves, and I was in the 4th wave. We positioned ourselves about middle of the pack and waited for the gun. You start holding on to the boat dock and are standing in about 2 feet deep water so you have to take a few step before you can start swimming. When the gun went off, I immediately went to the buoy line and started going out. I felt like I was swimming pretty good and seemed to sight good. My time was really disappointing as I was expecting to be at least a minute faster. What would you do differently?: Swim faster, or straighter, or whatever is was that made me swim so slow. Transition 1
Comments: When you exit the swim you have to make your way up a little grass/dirt hill. I cleaned my feet off with small towel, put on helmet, shoes, sunglasses and headed out. I was about 1 min faster this year over last. What would you do differently?: Not sure...seemed to go pretty smooth. Bike
Comments: I borrowed Pilgrim's HED Disk for this race, so I was hoping for a fast bike split. The rear cog on the disk must be spaced differently than my other wheels, as I couldn't shift to certain gears. I knew this from a test ride on Thursday, but went with it anyway. The shifting problems may have hurt a little but not that much. For some reason my legs felt dead on this ride. The hills going out to the turn around were killing me. I only got passed once on the course, and it was by ABQKid screaming up the hills. The disk felt fast coming back down. HMM may have to investigate a disk some more. The other strange thing was not having speed or cadence, so I was riding by feel. Was 3 minutes faster than last year. What would you do differently?: Need to drink more. I only drank about 1/4 of my aero bottle. Other than not drinking enough, not sure...I'm happy with my time. Transition 2
Comments: T2 went pretty good. Took off helmet and bike shoes, put on running shoes, grabbed my visor, race belt and sunglasses. Drank a gel and off I went. Was about 10 seconds faster than last year. What would you do differently?: Could save some time by drinking gel on bike instead of in transition. Run
Comments: The fatigued legs continued on the run. I felt like I was barely shuffling along. I was able to pass a few people and only got passed once at the end. The run is mostly on a little dirt trail, and I got a small rock in my shoe and debated if I should stop and take it out or just keep going. I just kept going and the bottom of my foot was bleeding after the race. Run was about a minute faster than last year. What would you do differently?: Not get a rock in my shoe, even though I don't think it slowed my down any. Post race
Warm down: Finished, grabbed some fruit and water and stood with the other Outlaws cheering on people that we knew. Another cool thing was that I got to meet another BT'er, JASHAC. He was a great guy and had great race for being new to the sport. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think you can always look back and say I could have gone harder, so I'll go with that and say I could have gone harder. Event comments: This is a fun race and one that I enjoy. My goal was to improve over last years time, and I beat it by 5-6 minutes so I'm happy with that. Last updated: 2007-05-10 12:00 AM

ABQKid and I work up about 5:45 ate an uncrustable and banana. Grabbed our stuff and met amybunny in the parking lot. We loaded up the truck and drove the 20 miles to Dexter.
This race has assigned transitions spots, so we found them, and setup. Went on a short ride to check my shifting. Did a light jog and then headed to our wave for the the swim start.
