Pre-race routine:

This was my first triathlon, so I had no set routine in place. I did play rugby for a number of years, so Saturday events aren't new to me. I am not a big fan of changing up my routine prior to any event, so I just did the same thing I do every Sat morning, woke up with my daughter and had a regular breakfast (bagel, english muffin, coffee, juice etc). I was able to visit with some friends prior to the event and just soak up the great weather.
Event warmup:

Stretched some, though I should have done more. I was able to size up the area, scout out the pond and just soak in the event. Its all about having a good time.
Swim
  • 16m 18s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had fun, met some friendly people prior to the start and I was very comfortable with the format.

This was a good time for me as I am not a fast swimmer. I feel very comfortable in the water, but I just don't move to swiftly. The first leg of the race left me veering to far away from the far bouy, so I had to right myself numerous times and I probably added 50 yards to my total swim distance.
What would you do differently?:

Working up to the race, I was focusing on the distance of the event rather than a fast pace. For my next event, I will train for speed since I have more confidence in my distance ability. Also, I need to be more aggresive with the swim. Since it was my first event, I wanted to focus on my game plan with as little interference as possible from other racers. In the future, I will hold my own more in the swim.
Transition 1
  • 05m 23s
Comments:

Because of my sprained ankle, it took me longer to transition to the next event. I had to actually lace up my ankle brace and tend to it more than I would have had to otherwise. Plus, I didn't want to run on the uneven ground without shoes or support.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Maybe buy some pedal clips and appropriate biking shoes, but that is about it.
Bike
  • 46m 27s
  • 14.5 miles
  • 18.73 mile/hr
Comments:

My computer didn't work, so I didn't know where I was at on the ride. Also, there was no marking along the way to indicate milage on the route, so it was hard to gauge speed.
What would you do differently?:

With the headwind and the fact I was passing people, it felt as if I was going faster than I really was. Had I known, I probably would have pushed it more. Anyway, rookie mistake and I will correct it for the next race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

I cramped in my calf right as I lept from the bike, so I walked to my rack instead of running. Otherwise, it went well and I was on my way.
What would you do differently?:

Not take a camel back with me on the run.
Run
  • 36m 9s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 10m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew I was going to be slow at this because my ankle prohibitted me from really training for the run. My running fitness was an issue and my legs were not that impressed with a 3.5 mile run after such a long break of inactivity. Anyway, I finished without walking and I met my goals, so for the conditions, I am happy with the result.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on my running fitness and get my legs back in shape.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked it off for a minute. Alternated gaterade and beer for the next hour as to cover all bases.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My ankle and inexperience limited me. I have a good idea what I have to do to shave 7-10 minutes off of my time for the next few sprints. For next year, I want to be at the 1:30 mark.

Event comments:

I really enjoyed this race and I have already recommended it to others. I will also be putting it on my calender for next year and I look forward to improving my times. My only suggestions (take with a grain of salt as I am a rookie) would be:
1) More trash cans in the vacinity. I spent a lot of time looking for a can, when my legs were already tired from the event. (poor me, right)
2) A Clydsdale division for us big folk. Since this is the only way I might ever be able to be competitive, I would like it for selfish reasons. (along those same lines, shirts that are XXL).

Great race, great people, great weather, and a fun time all the way around.

Overall: 248/307
Performance: Good
Suit: Just a jammer
Course: It was a nice course and the water was pretty good. Well marked and easy to follow. The water start was easy, but it was cumbersome getting from the "Water start platform" to the beach for the run to the tranistion area. I got a bad ankle sprain the last weekend in March, so I was a little hesitant to run really hard in the uneven and mucky bottom of the pond. I actually swam/crawled to shore.

Course: Hot course with very little shade. It was fun, but I think a loop rather than an out and back would have been better. Also, my ankle didn't feel strong at all while running through the soccer field, so I had to take it a little slower through there.
