Swim
Comments: I expected the swim to be difficult for me, and it was. However, it was not as disastrous as it could have been. I started out toward the back and at the side. I tried to start out nice and slow. Pretty soon, I realized that I was passing people. However, soon the legs and arms started to get to me and I ended up breast stroking more than I probably should. The breast stroking wore me out more the freestyle, but every time I did freestyle for more than a few strokes, I went off course. I nearly missed the turnaround! I got back on track, but then the return trip felt a lot more difficult. I felt like it was harder for me to spot the shore! Strange. I ended up taking my goggles off a couple times to make sure that I was headed in the right direction. This really slowed me down. What would you do differently?: I regret doing as much breast stroke as I did. I feel like I had the freestyle part down okay but combined with sighting? Not so much. Obviously need a lot more work here. However, this was only the third open water swim I did, so, not terrible considering. I didn't need to be pulled out and I didn't need to hold a kayak. Transition 1
Comments: Put my bike shoes on before, since I'm not ready for the cool "jump on the bike and pedal on top of the shoes" transitions quite yet. What would you do differently?: This could have been faster, but I wanted to make sure that I remembered everything I had to do. Bike
Comments: I was definitely in Zone 4 or 5 for the first part of this bike! Yikes, I was breathing hard. The swim wore me out more than it should have. However, my legs were not tired. This pace was faster than I had trained, so I was happy with that. I was actually not passed as much as I expected to be (because most people were already out of the lake) and I even passed several people. What surprised me the most was that I was actually passing people on the inclines (I hesitate to say "hills" because they really weren't). I just sat back and kept my cadence high and the inclines didn't wear me out too much. What would you do differently?: Well, being a little fresher after the swim would have helped. Transition 2
Comments: Some person had their hybrid just propped up on a kickstand right where I was supposed to rack my bike. That was annoying. So, racking the bike took longer than it should have because I had to squeeze mine in without bringing the whole thing down. What would you do differently?: I feel like I should have taken a second to use the porta=potty. I'm a fast pee-er, so I don't think it would have added too much time and I would have been a lot more comfortable on the run. Run
Comments: I didn't walk once! Felt pretty good, despite really needing to pee. Tried to keep my mind off of it and just repeat to myself "you love running, you are doing great." What would you do differently?: Again with the peeing in T2. Post race
Warm down: Walking around, drinking Gatorade, eating cookies. What limited your ability to perform faster: My first triathlon, so there is only room for improvement! I'm super pleased, though. Last updated: 2007-07-12 12:00 AM

Didn't sleep too well the night before--as I expected. Got up, got my shorts and top on, made toast with peanut butter and honey, downed a glass of water and met Sara and Scott who were out front to pick me up. It was about an hour and a half drive to Springfield. Had gas station coffee, a granola bar and generally tried to stay calm.
Wow. There were lots of fancy bikes and very lean, muscular women. Didn't really warm up besides stretching. Tried to just not get too intimidated.
