Swim
Comments: This was a decent swim for me. The one problem was that, in an attempt to catch up a little, I kind of threw out my plan to stay composed and to have perfect technique. I probably wasted too much energy. What would you do differently?: Stick to the plan of saving energy by being in perfect form. Transition 1
Comments: This was a pretty slow T1 that could have been faster. I had trouble with the wetsuit. Additionally, I was inefficient in getting my helmet and glasses on. And, for that matter, my shoes. What would you do differently?: Practice beforehand! Bike
Comments: I was definitely hurting after the swim, especially b/c you have to run from the beach to the transition zone (up a hill). It took a while to get in my groove, but I think I eventually found it. At one point, I was neck and neck with Foster Hays, and we were battling it out together, playing a mental game of tag. I definitely blew up on the second lap and went pretty slowly on the way to T2. What would you do differently?: Pace myself better. Actually ride a bike in the week before the race. Transition 2
Comments: This was fairly good for me. What would you do differently?: I could have been more aggressive with the bike shoes off bit. Run
Comments: I felt very shitty and slow coming out of T2, and I was definitely wheezing a little from my cold. I actually had a feeling that I was going to bonk and drop out of the race because I felt so heavy and slow. Fortunately, I had jumped out of T2 about 5 seconds behind Foster, and I was motivated to catch up with him. We ran together for a bit, but then I wanted to break him, so I upped the pace. This was a good thing. I kept the higher pace and kept extending my lead. I started to get the beginnings of cramps in my hamstrings (probably from changing my bike position at the last minute), but I focused on not cramping (if that is possible) and just staying smooth on the road. What would you do differently?: This was great under the circumstances. I ran a pretty fast time even though I was cramping and am still sick. Post race
Warm down: Nothing but eating and drinking. What limited your ability to perform faster: My cold that has afflicted me since last Sunday. In the week preceding the race, I took a short run of 30 minutes on Monday and a very short spin of the legs on my trainer. Event comments: This race is so fun. The atmosphere is great and the sponsors do a great job with the post-race ceremony. Last updated: 2007-09-20 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5:20am and ate a blueberry bagel (not cream cheese) and had a bottle of Gatorade Rain. Nibbled on a Powerbar.
At the race site, I visualized the course and how I was going to approach each segment. Special focus on T1.
I took a 10 minute warm up jog with 5 or 6 quick striders to get the heart rate up.
