Swim
Comments: The Swim Course was a little different...not the usual rectangle...it was like an escalene triangle...swimming from south to north/east to the 1st and 2nd bouy where we had to do a small round and headed to the exit at north/west from this 2nd buoy. It was a good beginning...even the ocean was very choppy and the waves were breaking over my head and pusihing me out of my course...it was a very fast swim till the 1st Bouy and 2nd buoys but a little wide open in the right side of the 1st one but just when I got in the 2nd bouy to round it I recovered and I had an excellent swim...keeping a constant pace and applying my Total Immersion Technique without problem and drafting sometimes. During the swim...I heard the life guards yelling to the people, I didn't know why they were yelling...cuz...I was very focused in my swimming...but...in one point that I passed next of one of the life guards...I saw 3 or 4 persons holding in the board...I think many people freaked-out for the condition of the ocean...something that didn't bother me...I felt very confident. When I got out of the water together with my best girlfriend Julie...I checked my time and it was exactly 8 minutes...I was very impressed cuz the condition of the ocean...that means that I did it great!!!...but...this time the Organizers included the running from the exit till the Transition Area in the swimming time...something that I don't like cuz you can't know your real swimming time...and not only that...if you are a fast runner like in my case...I passed a lot people that did swim faster than me and my swim time was better than their times. Just when I got out of the water and started to run to the Transition Area and at the same time I removed cap/goggles/wax-ear plugs and put them inside my cap...We ran maybe 300 to 400 yards from the beach to the Transition Area. What would you do differently?: Continue with my trainings... Transition 1
Comments: Just before I got in the Transition Area I got water from the water aid station next to the entrance to rinse the salty/nasty taste of my mouth. It was an excellent transition I was the fastest (1st) in my Age Group like usual and 101 Overall...First put sunglasses/helmet and almost at the same time my biking shoes and run as fast as possible with my bike out of the Transition Area. What would you do differently?: Practice and practice... Bike
Comments: Just when I got in my bike...I was flying...off course we had tailwinds that helped a lot but at the same time we had crosswinds and I had to keep my handlebar hard...when I got in the "Rickenbacker Causeway Bridge" I did my best climb that I have done in this bike course...I got in the top of the bridge very fast that I was very impressed of me...then...down-hill...around 37 to 40 mph...Yahoooo!!! till the U-turn at 400 or 500 yards after the bridge and again to go and to climb the bridge...ufff!!!...Just when I got at the top of the bridge...I said to me: "That's all"...but no...it when we started other challenge in the bike course...cuz...this time we had strong winds agains us (headwinds and crosswinds)...but I did the best that I could and it was my best time that I have done in this Bike Course and I Knew that I was doing great cuz my best girlfriend Julie that is usually the fastest rider in our Age Group reached/paseed me just when we were 2 miles far from the transition area...and at the same time I was asking me: "Can you imagine my Bike time if we wouldn't have had strong winds???". When I got to the Bike Desmount Area...I did my desmount like usual like the Pro/Elite but keeping my shoes on... What would you do differently?: Continue with my trainings Transition 2
Comments: Just when I did my bike desmount...I ran as fast as possible till my rack area...but...by my surprise I found 2 stucked bikes in my place...I got very mad...Grrrrrrrr!!! that I pushed so hard that almost all the rack fall...but...at least I could open enough space and place my bike...but still I was super-mad...it's always in my T2...it made me lost a valuable time...even all the circunstances I was the 2nd fastest in my Age Group and 171 Overall...still not bad!!!. I changed my shoes very fast and took my belt/Bid#, hat and a bottle of water and ran very fast out of the Transition Area... What would you do differently?: Practice and practice... Run
Comments: Just when I got out the Transition Area...I buckled my belt w/Bid # and put my hat while I was running with a good pace...not too fast and not too slow...and the first thing that I did it was to drink enough water from my bottle and tossed the rest over my head and neck...and continued with my running with a constant pace...and...just in the U-turn in the 0.5 mile I reached/passed my best grifriend Julie that she passed me in the bike course...at that point I knew that I was first...and I started to push a little more and more...cuz...I knew that other girlfriend that is the fastest runner in our Age Group was coming behind me...but...it was not till after the mile 2.5 when she finally reached/passed me...and we both sprinted till the Finish Line and I told her "go and get it"...!!!" Just when I was approching to the Finish Line I heard my Buddy yelled me and I pushed more hard but still...She got 1st place and me 2nd place for only 22 seconds. It was an excellent run...I felt great. Now the funny part of the running was just before the water aid station in the mile 2...we were running in a straigh paved path and all along this area are many trees...and...I started to feel like sprinkles over me...and I was wondering..."Ok...It's raining??? No...it's not possible...it's very sunny" and at the same time...I could hear an unusual noises coming from some kind of bugs that were over the trees...and...it was when I found out...they were buzzers and they were doing pee over me...LOL What would you do differently?: Train and train... Post race
Warm down: Just when I passed the Finish Line...a volunteer gave me a bottle of water and other took my chip from my left ankle...and...I met with my Buddy in the Water Fun Area for kids...and...triathletes too LOL... and we rinsed our bodies...It was great to feel the cool and fresh water... What limited your ability to perform faster: The strong winds in the bike course and off course the incovenientes in my 2nd transition Last updated: 2008-01-03 12:00 AM

Friday July18th: We (My Buddy and me) went to pick-up our Race Packages at noon due the number of participants (694 for Triathlon/ 100 Duathlon). He got the Bid # 168 and me the Bid # 168.
Saturday July19th: We woke-up early in the morning around 7 am...took a good breakfast...left from home around 8:30 to Saga Bay Lake to do a good swim. We did swim almost 1500 mts. Came back home...took a good lunch: lasagna and salad...took a nap for 1 hour. At 3:00 pmm...we prepared/packed all our stuff for the race...washed/lubed/tuned bikes...prepared all our beverages and placed in the refrigerator and freezer. Took an early dinner: tortellini w/Alfredo Sauce and grilled steak. Loaded our bikes and bags with our stuff for the race in the car before we went to bed at 9 pm.
Sunday July20th: We woke-up at 4:25 am. Took our usual pre-race breakfast: orange juice, small bowl with macaroni & cheese and my Soy Protein Shake (chocolate) and our multi-vitamins/minerals packages, Amino 1500, Glucosamine, Q-10.
Took our coolers/beverages and left from home around 5:00 am...and...got in Crandon Park around 5:45 am...the two lines at the entrance were not too long...parked car...took our bikes and bag and went to get body-marked and our chips. Went to the Transition Are and placed our bikes in the rack. I got the first space in the rack...yes!!!
Put my helmet/sunglasses over the bike seat...my AeroBottle with AminoVital/water in the braket over the AeroBars. Biking/running shoes, hat, belt with Bid # and a frozen bottle of water under my bike in the grass.
When everything was set-up...I checked the exit/entrance in the Transition Area and where exactly my bike was. Then I did sit in a picnic table...relaxed...closed eyes...did a mental visualization of the race.
Took a Strawberry Clif Energy Gel and 2 caplets of Endurolyte with AminoVital/water and took my cap/goggles/wax-ear plugs and headed to the Swim Area at the beach with other Clif Energy Gel and a bottle of water around 6:45 am...plain of time...
It was a beautiful morning and very windy, gusty winds coming from SE at 20 to 25 mph...it was fresh...not too hot...We were maybe in the 80o's F...but during the race the temperatures rised in between 85o and 89oF.
When we got in the Swim Area...we started to stretch arms and legs...then jumped into the water...the water temperatures were around 82of...just right...but...the ocean was very choppy cuz the gusty winds...
I swam maybe 200 mts. and came back to shore...get out...took my second Energy Gel with water...and waited till the race started...in time like usual but a little different...they started with the Wave #1 at 7:28 with the Pro/Elite Male and Female and Physical Challenge...then the Duathlon started at 7:30 am and continued with the rest of the waves every 5 minutes...My Buddy was in the Wave # 4 and me in the Wave # 8 (Female 40+/Feamle Fat Tire/Athena/All Relays Teams) at 8:00 am...at that point I was a little worried about the heat.
