Total Time = 1h 27m 16s
Overall Rank = 107/223
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 11/14
Pre-race routine:

Cheerios for breakfast. Cliff bar on the way to the race. Steph beat me to the registration table, so I was worried she would take the end spot on the rack. Luckily, our numbers fell right around the rack split, so we both got primo spots.
Event warmup:

Swam about 200 yards. Wandered around.
Swim
  • 08m 5s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was the best tri-swim I've ever had. Good start, breathing under control, minimal contact with other swimmers, good sighting.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing aside from train more and be faster.
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

This went OK. Faster than the previous race, but it could have been better. Fumbled with my bike shoes a little bit.
Bike
  • 43m 13s
  • 15.2 miles
  • 21.10 mile/hr
Comments:

Clearly a higher level of competition showed up here. In the first race of the series I was 44 seconds faster, and placed in the 16th percentile, vs. the 28th percentile here.

With regard to this one, I started out too fast. Combined with the heat and headwind after the turn-around, I watched my average speed drop continuously after the 5-mile marker.
What would you do differently?:

Start slower, of course. Bring a second water bottle on the bike when heat index is > 100 degrees.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

This went very smoothly. Improved 10 seconds over last time.
Run
  • 33m 43s
  • 3 miles
  • 11m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

This was H-O-T hot! Tailwind for the first half made it like running in a steamy, still sauna. That made a breeze when you got to the turnaround point, but I had already overheated by then.
What would you do differently?:

Train for the run more. Carry my own cold water.
Post race
Warm down:

Try not to puke. Cool off in the shower behind the bathrooms. Get my camera and wait for everyone else to come in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of run training, heat.

Event comments:

Late start...unusual for DRC. Apparently the buckles that hold the swim area buoy lines in place had rusted shut. Took some time for them to get those cut away and the swim course set. Otherwise, everything was good as usual.
