Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:30 and had an egg, ww toast with butter and honey and some OJ. Packed up the car and left at 4:00 to pick up a buddy. We got to the race at about 5:00, parked and headed over to the transition. Got a good spot on the end, closest to the bike in/out. Unpacked my stuff, grabbed a bar and then proceeded to walk around.
Event warmup:

Transition was closed at 6:45 which was the same time the elites were going off. Scott Tinley raced which was pretty cool so I wanted to go down and watch him and the others go off. Because it was so overcast and the mist was so heavy (it was like a light rain at times), I ended up puttin my wetsuit all the way on, even though might heat wasn't scheduled to go out until 7:34. After they went out I stretched and then went out for some light swimming (maybe 5 minutes). I watched my buddies heat go off and then went back out in the water for a couple of more minutes. I then headed over to the coral for our heat. Right when I was walking in I heard my name and it was buddy of mine from highschool, who I run into at races now and again. We chatted for a few minutes and then got ready to go.

As usual I'm always most nervous about the swim. I don't know why. It's always irrational. I was very nervous as soon as I woke up and it came and went through the morning, but about 20 minutes before my heat went off I went completely calm. I watched a 7 waves go out and knew that I didn't want to start our by running and swimming diagonally to the buoy so I ran down the beach and lined up with it before I went it. There was hardly any current and it worked well. The waves were small and it was very easy getting out. Once past the break the ocean was really calm and I swam very smoothly. My sighting was perfect and I felt like I was in control the whole time. I was really pleased with this.

Transition 1
  • 03m 38s

Coming out of the water you ran acout 1/2 up the beach before you hit the mat. After the mat you ran the rest of the way up the beach to a long uphill sidewalk. I walked about 1/2 of it and then ran the last 1/2 and then into the transition. I did well with everything except a bit of a problem getting on my Garmin.
What would you do differently?:

If my fitness was a bit better I would have ran all the way up the hill and not fumbled around with my Garmin.
  • 39m 34s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.85 mile/hr

I got off to a pretty good start but quickly realized that my bike fitness is not where it needs to be. I pushed pretty hard the whole time, but whenever there was a slight incline, my legs just lost steam. I worked hard on the first lap and stayed aero most of the time but on the second I came out of aero a few times and had to spin up a few inclines.

My Garmin had this as 13.1 miles which gave me an average of 19.8 which is more palatable as I was shooting for 20.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s

Because it was overcast/misty, the whole bike ride by glasses were fogged up. I was wet and had nothing to dry them off with so I just kept going. Once in transition I tried to clean them but didn't want to mess around to much and jetted.
What would you do differently?:

  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 12s  min/mile

I figured this would be where I fell apart, but when it was all said and done I did pretty well. I ran within myself on the first loop and then on the second started to push it. A guy passed me with a bout 500 yards to go and I tried to stay on his heels but couldn't hold on. He ended up finishing six seconds in front of me.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster!
Post race
Warm down:

I ran through the finish and went straight over and got a couple cups of drink and a PB & honey. I then wandered over and found the family. I chatted with them for a few minutes and then found my friend who I had come down with. It was his second race and I knew that he had to take off pretty quick so I congratulated him, said hi to his family and went back to pick up my stuff. I saw Tinley wandering around and wanted a picture but didn't have a camera. I took my stuff over to my family and then ran over to find the results. I ran into my highschool buddy and found out he came in 2nd in our AG. He beat me by 15 mintes...damn.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited training.

Event comments:

I liked this race. It was not huge but had many different activities going on through the whole weekend. There was a 5k, swimming events, a "duathlon", sprint, mini-sprint and paddleboard events. There was definitely stuff for the whole family to do. My son enjoyed the bounce house, shocker.
