Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5, ate and rode bike to the race start.
Event warmup:

just the ride to the park and then a quick 5 min jog.
Swim
  • 00m 35s
  • 50 yards
  • 01m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

The did what they called a kiddie "swim" due to storms in the area. All you did was run into the water, then along the shoreline and then out the chute.

I don't blame them for making this call as there was lightening in the area but it bums me out because I enjoy the swim.
Transition 1
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

with no wetsuit, no swim goggles, etc all the T times were fast.
Bike
  • 57m 52s
  • 21 miles
  • 21.77 mile/hr
Comments:

The rain started in while on the bike. Wind was also a factor. With no swim to seperate folks the entire 21 mile course was just packed. It was impossible not to draft as they were people everywhere. Also hard to pass and the wet conditions made me a bit nervous when trying to get around people.

For some reason my HR was sky high today. No idea why, just wasn't my day. I avg 21.6 for 56 miles at Chisago in low-mid zone 3. today I avg about the same speed but was in high zone 4 the entire time.

What would you do differently?:

I took 7 days off from biking after my HIM (was out of town) and I'm guessing that is part of the problem.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Run
  • 40m 42s
  • 5 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

about 1 mile into the run the rains and winds really hit. It was just coming down in waves. As someone who hates running in heat, I kind of enjoyed it because I stayed nice and cool the entire time!

I ended up with a rock in my left shoe, right by my big toe. I probably should have stopped and cleared it out but instead just ran with it. Ended up with a huge blister and a very, very sore toe.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing, very happy with the run especially considering how my HR was out of control today.
Post race
Warm down:

stood in the pouring rain waiting for my wife. We grabbed our gear and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I'm stilling feeling it from Chisago HIM.

Event comments:

I thought the RD did a fine job given the hand he was dealt with the weather. The volunteers also did a great job especially considering the weather conditions.
