Swim
Comments: cross between open water swim and a Texas cage match. I was expecting it to be rough, but I really got knocked hard a couple of times. I did stay calm, kept my heart rate in check and found some space to swim. I swam faster than I expected. Plenty of jelly fish and a couple of stingrays to watch and kept my mind occupied. Concentrated on form. What would you do differently?: start closer to the front. Transition 1
Comments: not a great transition time, but I did a full change into cycling gear and was deliberate so not to make a mistake. I would rather be comfortable for the 112 and give up a minute or two. change tent was crowded, I waited a minute or so for a seat. What would you do differently?: not much, my gear was well organized (used ziplock bags). I came out of t1 ready to ride. Bike
Comments: probably could have gone a little faster, but rode very conservatively. overall I felt good throughout, took plenty of food and hydration from the support stations. I shut down the motor when I got back to front beach road to prepare for the run. What would you do differently?: not much- I thought I had a smart ride. Did not let my ego get the best of me, in other words, did not mind getting passed! Transition 2
Comments: Glad to off of the bike! nice and easy, not in too much of a hurry. full change from cycling gear to running gear. felt great to get run started (mentally and physically). restroom stop. I carried a small white washcloth, which was great, I kept soaking it with water and giving myself a sponge bath. really refreshing and felt great to get the ride road grime off of me. What would you do differently?: nothing. Run
Comments: good first loop, kept telling myself to slow down, was running 11s. very concious to take some short walk breaks. Once I figured I was under 14 hours, I thought I would run when I could and walk where I needed to. By the end of the second loop there was not a huge difference between my run speed and a powerwalk! I felt crappy during mile 15-18 but started to feel better towards the end, cola helped settle my stomach a little. great volunteers! What would you do differently?: soak it all in!! have happy thoughts! Post race
Warm down: euphoric!! What limited your ability to perform faster: I finished with a smile, felt strong throughout and really; whats an hour or so between friends?? if I ever do another full IM (which is not likely), maybe I'll be a little more aggressive and take a few more risks. Event comments: I LOVED Saturday 07th November 2009. I will remember it for the rest of my life!!! Thanks to my Bride Melissa and my Son Will for supporting me every step of the way!! Will's birthday on Friday. Mom and Dad were able to be there. a good day!Friday night pasta at home and bed early. Slept ok, still worried about my gear even after check and re-check and re-check again... and normally I'm not a worrier.
Up at 3:30. coffee and bagel, bananna, poweraide and water, a couple of gels. Melissa dropped me at Boardwalk, easy through body marking and into transition area to check gear (again!). Back into the Boardwalk lobby to relax, My family joined me and it helped keep me calm. I was consious not to become too emotional prior to the start, I knew I would need that energy later in the day... Got suited up, saw family again on the beach and made my way into the holding area prior to the gun. I did not get into the water prior to start.
