Pre-race routine:

Woke up early to drive 2 hours to the event. The race didn't start until later in the day, so it wasn't that bad.
Event warmup:

Short Run. Wish I had a little bike trainer to spin a bit before the race.
Swim
  • 04m 59s
  • 330 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

As I was getting on my bike, I noticed something was wrong. But I couldn't figure it out as the race official was telling me to get going and not block transition. SO on the bike I went.
What would you do differently?:

Should have done a pre race bike inspection.
Bike
  • 45m 25s
  • 15 miles
  • 19.82 mile/hr
Comments:

I had my rear brake too tight so it rubbed the entire race. I thought my bike was going to fall apart because it was making so much noise. You live and you learn. Also, the college kids went first and they were all over the course. I just kept passing people. Never passed so many people on the bike portion.
What would you do differently?:

Open my brakes!
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

I got into transition with some of the college girls. I was already ahead of them because it was a TT start and they started about 10 min in front of me, but I still had to beat them out of transition.
Run
  • 22m 52s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was half on trail and half on pavement. Normally I love trail races. This one was different because it was only a 5K. I had some trouble passing people on the trail portion. They were trail hogs. YUK! I also don't think I was going fast enough for myself. Should have been in the low 7s/mile for race pace.
What would you do differently?:

Worn trail shoes and tried to pass more on the trails.
Post race
Warm down:

Little run. Felt good. Had to run uphill to get out of the area, so it wasn't too much fun.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My running and my brakes.

Event comments:

I will probably do it again next year. It was awesome, especially the swim. Very cold! Makes you appreciate a heated pool

Water was cold. I could barely put my face in the water. It make it really hard to breath because your body was just so cold.
Suit: Nineteen Wet Suit
Course: Simple out ant back. I think the race officials shortened the course to 330 yards. I was out of the water really quick. I had a time up at the turn around because a bunch of people were floating, but other than that, no worries.
