Pre-race routine:

The night before I laid out all of my gear and cleaned up the bike. The night before the race was 4th of July so we went out and watched some fireworks. Probably got to sleep about 1:30am. Got up at 4:30 and ate a Bagel with cream cheese, yogurt, and some water. Not many calories, but I ate so late the night before I couldn't get anything else down. Packed up the car and took off. Weather was overcast and it started to rain as I pulled out of the driveway....this could be interesting.
Event warmup:

My warm-up consisted of walking from the parking garage to the race site. Not much of a warm up, but this race for me is more of a long training day. I wasn't too worried about putting up a good time.

Comments:

Was pretty comfortable with this swim. This was my first open water of this season. Took is easy for the first 700 meters and tried to pick it up towards the end. Took me a while to find my swimming rhythm. I was trying to focus on keeping my breathing under control and to continue to breath bilaterally. This is something that I have been working on for this season and was able to do so. I would sometimes breath on the same side if I felt like I needed the extra air. I started towards the end of the pack and tried to work on tickling the toes of the person in front of me. (Drafting) I was somewhat successful.
What would you do differently?:

I think a real warm up would help me get into the rhythm earlier. I might think about some defogger for my goggles. They fogged up early and I had to stop and clean them so I could see. I ended up kicking the crap out of someone behind me. Sorry, hope it didn't hurt you. I felt that hit in my heel for like a minute after impact.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Made a last second decision to ride without socks. Didn't cost me any real time, I tossed my socks over and they were harder to find for the run portion. Felt a little unorganized because of this.
What would you do differently?:

Think out the transition more. Have plan and stick to it. Work on transitioning with my shoes on the bike.

Comments:

This ride was on very smooth roads. It was more hilly than I was expecting. I had run a 12 mile training run the day before this race and could feel the fatigue in my quads on the hills. It was an even balance of hills vs. downhills. Had a lot of trouble with my bike. After shifting out of the big ring, I couldn't get back into it. this caused me to spin out on the faster sections of the course. Very frustrating and hurt my average. But it was just a long training day right? So I working on holding a high cadence.
What would you do differently?:

Hey Stupid, get your bike tuned up. You have been just dealing with this shifting problem for months. Get it fixed already.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

First time to come into transition with my feet on my shoes. I was just a little confused as to what to do next, I was so used to my old routine. I decided to run with socks because of the wet conditions. Don't ask me the logic behind that because it wasn't wet anymore. I had to locate my socks because of my earlier decision to not use them on the bike. I actually left my bike, turned around to get a drink, remembered they had water outside of transition, turned around again and finally left.
What would you do differently?:

Have a plan and stick to it. I liked coming into transition without my shoes on. Just need to practice it a bit more. I should also drink before I get in so I don't worry about it when I am trying to get out.

Comments:

I started out way to fast. 8:41 first mile which is impossible for me to keep up for this race. I just ran 12 miles yesterday. After I eased in I felt pretty good. Took me about a mile to shake the rubber legs and feel normal. My breathing was pretty labored and I had that cramp in my diaphragm again. Not nearly as bad as before, but still there. My shoes were soaked I am sure from the rain earlier in the day. They were squishing with every step. I thought someone was pacing off of me for a while, and doing a perfect job of it, until I realized it was me making all of the noise. I had to smile at that one. I felt strong at the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not run 12 miles the day before.
Post race
Warm down:

Iced towels at the finish. Had 2 pieces of pizza, and an orange slice. Drank some water and stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This race for me was just a training race so I limited my own performance. I got some good work out of it though. Was able to work on breathing and drafting. How to deal with adversity on the bike and not just get pissed about the situation with the shifting.

Event comments:

I would do it again. Fun and fast.

Course: The course was a 12 mile 2 loop course on nice city streets. I was way more hilly than I expected. Over all it was pretty well laid out. There were a couple of sections where we would be riding in the right lane and after a turn we would switch over to the left lane. It was well marked and if I had known to look for this it wouldn't have been a problem. It only tricked me once. There was one tricky part, coming back to the transition there was a long split in the street surface that took some riders down. By the second loop they had a cone marking the spot. I had heard that the traffic cop might have moved the cone off the street that marked this obstacle. Who knows?
