Pre-race routine:

Got to the event plenty early and got an end spot on my rack. Got marked up, setup transition, and chilled with the friends that were doing the race with me.
Event warmup:

Did a light jog and stretched well. Did not put much focus on a swim warmup because the tide was low and the swim turned into a wade for most of the course.
Swim
  • 08m 30s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was more like a water jog for the first 1/3 and last 1/3 of the course. The tide was down and it was very shallow. The water was chest deep on me at the turn around bouy. This cause everyone to walk/run through the water for most of the course. It was a disappointment.
What would you do differently?:

Seeing that it wasn't going to be a true swim I should have started off on the inside of the pack and not the outside. This caused me to fall behind the lead group even though we were all going about the same speed. I could have easily finished in top half and shaved a minute or two just by doing this I think.
Transition 1
  • 03m 38s
Comments:

T1 included a run of several hundred yards to get from the water exit to transition entrance, so the times are long across the board. I transitioned smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

I should have ran the water exit to transition entrance faster. I was in a group and stuck with their pace, which was more of a trot. I could have shaved 30s to 1m here probably.
Bike
  • 54m 19s
  • 16.4 miles
  • 18.12 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt great on the bike. The course was good with several good hills. The start was uphill for the first 3/4 of a mile which was tough. The out had a few hills and the back had a slight headwind and a more hills. Overall it was a good course with good conditions. I was only passed by 4 people on the bike, 2 of which were from AG waves that started before me, so I am not sure where they came from.
What would you do differently?:

I should have pushed the bike harder. My computer was dead so I didn't have a feel for mph. I passed people throughout the ride so I knew I was doing alright, but not having my speed hurt me. I would have liked to average 19, and judging by the way I felt on the run I could have done so and been fine.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
What would you do differently?:

Get rid of the manual tie shoe laces. I didn't realize how bad it would suck to have to tie my shoes in transition. Other than that everything went smooth.
Run
  • 25m
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Out and back. The fist few hundred yards was up a steep hill, which was tough. The rest of the out was mostly uphill but they were slight so it wasn't too bad. The back was downhill and flat. Plenty of water stations setup and spectators out watching which was nice.
What would you do differently?:

For me it was a good time. I felt pretty good at the finish so perhaps I should have pushed the run a little harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching and a massage, followed by water, beer, and pizza.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My inexperience. I wasn't sure how hard to push myself on the bike and the run so I probably held back a little more than I should have. Now I have a better feel for how to judge my body on race day and hopefully it will help in the future. Overall I am very happy with my time and position in group considering this is my first tri.

Event comments:

I thought the race was great. The venue is absolutely perfect and the race organizers did a great job. There were plenty of volunteers and everything was organized. I will definitely do this race every chance I get. Would highly recommend it to anyone, especially a firt timer.
