Pre-race routine:

Up at 3:45am. 4.25hrs sleep. Kashi hot cereal, white toast w/butter and turkey,and another slice w/ black current jam. Milk to drink. Breakfast treated me well today. Got to event at 5am. Found an excellent spot in transition(1st rack after "experience" racks, 4th bike in, but only after my bike got moved but another competitor when I left). A cup of cool coffee 1hr before start. GU 30min before start.
Event warmup:

Entered water to warm-up around 7:15am and almost immediately they yelled to clear the water for the start. Resorted to some running in place and some upper body stretching.
Swim

Comments:

Started towards back of pack, away from buoys hoping to get in with my swim skill level and draft. Didn't happen. First 100m went okay but started to drift. Swam left after every buoy and had to swim back out from between the two lanes of buoys to go around the next buoy each time. Easily added and extra 50-100m on to the swim length. Upon arriving at the beach I stood up 15-20ft two soon and had to pull myself through waist-high waters.
What would you do differently?:

Swim further before standing up in water. Work on navigating in open water (looking forward to open water swims starting June 2nd). Of course a wet suit would be nice as well.

Okay considering no suit to take off but run shoes to put on.
What would you do differently?:

Helmet on while running to gate. Learn to jump on bike. Put some pull tabs on the back of my shoes. Get a set of clipless pedals and bike shoes.

Immediately took in an accel gel w/40mg caffeine. Periodically drank accelerade throughout. Took on another accel gelw/40mg caffeine at start of lap 2 and another w/20mg caffeine just before entering the park. Plenty of nutrition. Some rough shifting on hills and some surprises from the course with turns and corners.
What would you do differently?:

Ride the course before the event. Buy a bike rather than renting. Bike shoes and clipless pedals.

Good run. Felt something coming on above the knee but it's since cleared up. Shoes rubbed inner side of soles on last lap and blistered feet. Took water or sports drink at every station.
What would you do differently?:

Vaseline on seams in shoes(though I'm sure not wearing them on the bike would help).

Warm down:

Banana and whey. Stretched about 30min after event.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep. Minor blistering. Poor open water swimming. Lack of equipment(wetsuit, bike, bike shoes, clipless pedals)(then again they always say a poor workmen blames the tool).

Event comments:

The KC triathlon was great. I'll be back. My only issue would be a lack of info about the race ahead of time. It would have been great to have info on aid stations(locations and drinks). Also info on parking and the layout for the swim course would have been nice.
