Pre-race routine:

My first of this distance. We had been on vacation 2 weeks prior, and I had gotten in a few rides and runs, but then my wife got admitted to the hospial with meningitis the week prior to the event. I only got one run in that week and no bike time. I just wanted to finish the race, that is all.

Got up at 5 and ate a PB sammy then drove to the race.
Event warmup:

Just some gentle stretching.
Swim
  • 33m 14s
  • 2223 meters
  • 01m 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swam well. Really held a lot back since I did not know what to expect. Would not really change a thing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 04m 15s
Comments:

Just took me a minute to get the jersey on.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Bike
  • 3h 25m 38s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.34 mile/hr
Comments:

I had not spent much time on the bike the past few weeks and it showed. The headwind about killed me on the way back, just sucked the life out of me. I could have gone faster, but tried to hold back some for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe set up the bike a bit less aggressive. Maybe even ride a road bike on this course.
Transition 2
  • 02m 34s
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 2h 44m 44s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

The bike just took too much out of me. I think that I could have run it better, just had nothing left. The first 6 miles went to plan, but fell apart after that and went to a jog/walk. Walked a lot of the last 2 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Get more bike training in.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with my dad, drank some water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough bike training. A lot of stress and lost sleep from wifes hospital admission. Not making excuses, but just a reality. I went from close to 300 pounds down to almost 220 to do this race. Once I lose more and spend more time on the bike I will be faster.

Event comments:

Great race and course. I think that I bit off more than I could choose by doing this course for my first ever HIM. Finished OK, just slow. No regrets, just slow....
