Pre-race routine:

Early wake up with shower. Made coffee and egg sandwich and finished loading beverages and food into the car. Woke my husband up, who also sleep through his alarm. Reviewed kids routine with Grandma before leaving, left 15 min later then our objective. Turned out perfect, no traffic that early in the morning - arrived a few minutes after 6:00 am
Event warmup:

Set up gear and looked for friends and family also participating. Walked through the transition area's and tested finding my places. Had a last minute jog back to the car with my sister who forgot her goggles and needed my spare set. Did a few strokes in the water to wet down my wet suit, forgot how mucky and how fast it gets deep.
Lots of nerves this morning, my husbands first tri and his swim isn't all that strong. We are 103 and 104. It's hot and humid - something we haven't trained in all summer
Swim
  • 10m 54s
  • 528 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

Still trying to figure out if I gain enough time to justify wearing a wet suit when the water temp doesn't warrent it. My transition is slow and taking off a wet suit isn't helping.

Swim went well, not a fast as I was targeting - they say it's a 1/3 mile which is 581 yrds, not 528 yrds - quible, quible. Swam in a group much more then I expect or have in other tri's, I did stick myself in a more competitive area of the swim. Not too much positioning - I know the women next to me wanted over but I needed to hold my location. The way in felt real good but had to start dodging the back strokers and breast strokers from the wave before.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Think I could of went harder then I did
Transition 1
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Wet suit adds time, just don't know if it adds more then I save on the swim. I seem to be getting slower with transitions. Gloves went on easier - dried my hands better. Zipper got stock on suit but was still unzipped by the time I got to my bike - thanks to the long run we end up doing. It probably slowed my run down though.
What would you do differently?:

My zipper stuck going on - I should of checked it a couple of times before the start. Keep the urgency up and leave that stupid run number until the run.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 39s
  • 22 miles
  • 17.00 mile/hr
Comments:

The wind really hit on many of the legs - didn't really seem to matter which direction you were headed. Drank water during and had a gel late in the bike. I probably could have used (2). My drinking and riding is getting better but probably needed to get more in. Thought I was doing better then I was. This wasn't the day to hit targets
What would you do differently?:

Another gel due to weather conditions, keep drinking. Gain more confidence to take turns at high speeds. Need to work on hills more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Pretty quick transition. I was worried about running down that hill in bike shoes - did fine. Haven't seen anyone that was racing with me yet, usally my sister gets me mid bike and this year we were even in the same wave.
Legs felt good going into the run, no crazy cramping or numbness.
What would you do differently?:

I'm ok with this
Run
  • 34m 58s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Did take very long to realize that this really was not going to be a day to hit targets. I knew I was trudging along but really wasn't being very convincing to myself that I wanted to go any faster. Twisted my ankle in the woods coming down the hill towards T1 area. Looked to see if Owen's bike was gone - good, he made it out of the water. My sister caught me on the hill leaving the trails. Didn't see Brian until after the turn, he caught up shortly after. Crossed Amy at the tale end of leaving the neighborhood - still no sign of Owen. I am thinking more about him that my horrible pace... Finally see him at the base of the finish hill, he's heading out and I'm about to finish - he says "see you in an hour"
What would you do differently?:

Try to pull myself into my own race better and work on pushing through the lack luster attitude. Not use to the heat but wow, was I off. Walked through all the water stations to drink and splash.
Post race
Warm down:

I don't think I've ever drank so much vitamin water, gaterade and water in such a short period of time. I didn't have to go to the bathroom until we got home at 1:00pm. Watched for Owen to finish, chatted with cousins and friends - all of which said that the heat really did them in. Took a quick shower and changed. Took our time backing up. Watched the last runner come in - a women in her upper 80's, smiling all the way.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not use to the heat, should of fueled better to help compensate. Need to continue to add depth to my conditioning. 3rd season of tri's (if you can really count my first which was 4 weeks before Camp Whitcomb after 5 year of being seditary - my sister said it would be "fun")

Event comments:

A couple of intersections this year were a little un-nerving. I had to stop at a four way and hope I was OK to go. Volenteers were not controlling traffic.
The weather played more of a roll then I expected. I was dead asleep by 8:30 that night and my weight has fluctuated all week - I think trying to rehydrate correctly and rebuild.
