Pre-race routine:

To bring you up to speed....this was the race a year ago where I decided I was going to do IM-WI. My old X-C/Track coach, Terri Labinski lit the fire. How? The initial involuntary look of shock and revulsion on his face at seeing how much I had let myself go over the past 15+ yrs. Anyway, that moment I said enough is enough - let's set a big goal and go for it. It's been a fun year since.

Back to the pre-race routine. Had shelled myself the day before on a R/T ride from Pewaukee to Lake Mills - forgot to pack enough water and paid for it. So tried to get to sleep early after trying to rehydrate. Woke up around 4:45, had some infinit and gummy bears.
Event warmup:

Biked from home to course. Warmed up by complaining that I should have broght my wet suit to stay warm before getting in the water :) It wasn't bad really, just chilly before teh sun hit it's stride.
Swim
  • 09m 2s
  • 400 yards
  • 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swam poorly. I hadn't done a race since I freaked out in the donkey pre-season warmup in EL. Therefore, was a little anxious about the swim. I ended up waiting in the back of the group. That meant once I got my swim groove on I was running into all the slower swimmers ahead of me. Sorry about that. I tried to get around them but that led me at on point to being 30 yrds inside the square on the way back.
What would you do differently?:

Start near the front, remain confident, re-learn how to swim straight.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

I was busy working on a balloon animal and couldn't get the last knot done...
Man, I was slow. I found my bike easy here - just couldn't get socks on so I ended up going without them. I didn't hurry but I didn't feel like I took nearly 3 minutes either.
What would you do differently?:

I gotta think about this - plan better probably. Haven't been worrying about it too much since IM-WI is my real race of the year so T1/T2 are low on my list of things to worry about.
Bike
  • 43m 11s
  • 15.6 miles
  • 21.68 mile/hr
Comments:

I need to get my toeclips fixed - tack on another 30 secs at the start trying to get my feet clipped in. Good times.
After that - it was fun. I had to have passed 200+ people. Only was passed by one guy - another guy I caught, he recaught me and then I got him on a downhill. Momentum is the big man's friend on the downhill.
I felt good on tired legs. Last year, I did this in 54 minutes so a 10min improvement felt good.
What would you do differently?:

There were two points where I crested a hill and didn't push. Should have. Also need to lose weight so I'm doing 10mph rather than 8mph up the hill.
Transition 2
  • 02m 32s
Comments:

I'm an airhead.

I come into T2 pretty jazzed about my bike, and can't find my rack. I had picked out a bike of a guy at the front of our row that I thought would be there when I got in. He wasn't. In fact, there were no bikes in my rack nor the one before or after mine. So instead of looking for my number, I run around looking for my transition bag. Finally, I stopped being dumb and figured out where to dump out my bike and such.
What would you do differently?:

Well, I ended up racking my bike in my wife's spot. She didn't like that, still was reminding me of it a day later. Sorry honey!
Run
  • 26m 11s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Pre-race, I was debating not doing the run. I tweaked some small muscles deep in my left leg, and my PT told me on Friday I was supposed to avoid doing anything above a jog until we get them back to a happy place. I wasn't sure if I was smart enough to hold back in the heat of a race.
Anyway, ended up deciding I'd just shoot for ~8:30 which is an easy jog pace for me, and make sure not to hurt myself at all costs. Mission accomplished.
What would you do differently?:

Not jump into Ironman training straight from couch potato - prob wouldn't keep having these little dumb leg injuries.
Post race
Warm down:

Got water, walked over to 50 yrds left and yelled for people to kick it in. Eventually biked it home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run - injury limited.
Bike - I'm happy.
Swim - lack of swimming.
Transition - ADHD.

Event comments:

Thought the swim was well handled - lot of lifeguards- crafts out there, and the waves were father apart than I remember from some previous sprints I was in. I think they did a good job limiting the entrants as well - when I heard the rumor 2000 people were allowed in, I was worried for everyone's safety on the bike course. Glad it was just a rumor.
