Pre-race routine:

Got there late and was totally blindsided by the port-a-potty ambush. Was among the last in the transition zone and literally just threw everything down on a towel. I would have liked and had planned to systematically place shoes and gear in order for quicker transitions, but at that point I was worried I wouldn't get to the start on time. Had planned to do a little jump rope to loosen the legs and take a quick dip in the water, but again all that was scratched thanks to my tardiness.
Event warmup:

Running to get to the start on time.
Swim
  • 12m 40s
  • 550 meters
  • 02m 18s / 100 meters
Comments:

Should probably invest in a wetsuit. I consider myself an above average simmer but was watching everyone in their silly wetsuits just glide right by me. I had the opportunity to wear one, but opted not to and I think I could have had a better swim split if I was wrapped in rubber.
What would you do differently?:

Wear a wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 04m 18s
Comments:

First ever tri and when I got to the transition zone it showed. Had a brain fart and just didn't know what to do first.
What would you do differently?:

Get to the race much earlier and take my time setting up the transition area and run through some practice transitions. Practice leaving shoes on bike and jumping into them.
Bike
  • 45m 2s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 16.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Really enjoyed the bike (not as much as the swim however). During the race I surprised myself because I was simply passing everyone in sight. I thought, "Holy cow I'm a natural cyclist and am probably shaving off minutes from my race!". Well I was the second to last wave to enter the water so all the slower folks were ahead of me and those real cyclist were long gone. When I got the results I settled back down to earth.
What would you do differently?:

Considering I got the bike about a week before the race and didn't have much practice on it, I think I faired pretty well. Will definitely do some more actual riding on the bike to practice for the next race.
Transition 2
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Much better in T2 would like to practice leaving shoes on bike as opposed to taking them off once I've racked it. It's not easy running through the transition zone with those things.
What would you do differently?:

Get a race belt for by bib #.
Run
  • 23m 21s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Very prod of my run. Didn't realize how much all that running would pay off. Exceeded my goal so I am happy with my performance.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of water and a light stretch, although next time I will take a good 20 - 30 min for post race stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

weak bike and swim and very weak T1. Perhaps a wetsuit would have helped, but my swim does need some improvement.

Event comments:

Great race for my fist every tri. Had a blast and would recommend it to anyone. Just watch the oyster beds.
