Overall Rank = 24/92
Age Group = M30-39
Age Group Rank = 10/26
Pre-race routine:

Had my usual bagel and cream cheese with coffee. Got packed up and to the race site early. Had plenty of time to get set up and did a quick warm up swim.
Event warmup:

5 minutes in the water to loosen up.
Swim
  • 28m 16s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 53s / 100 meters
Comments:

The course was fine but wasn't well marked with buoys. I tried to start in the middle of the group since I was in the first wave. I thought if I could get out in front I could swim my race without avoiding traffic. Bad idea. I got pummelled and actually ended up having the worst start ever. I finally regrouped after the first turn. The last leg in was without a good path. Most of us ended up in some thick weeds within 200 yards off shore because it was the straightest line.
What would you do differently?:

Don't start in the mix and go around the weeds.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Thought I nailed this but was very disappointed when I saw my time.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 7s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 20.35 mile/hr
Comments:

It was a good ride. With more training, I'll get faster.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Well executed. Lost a couple seconds putting on my Fuel Belt.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing.
Run
  • 46m 40s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

It started pouring rain when I started running. I kept a pretty consistent pace but still managed a negative split. I could have pushed it a little harder but there was no one in front of me I could have caught and I wasn't passed by anyone in my age group so I didn't really think I needed to. If I new I would miss my goal time by less than a minute, I probably would have pushed it.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rain to a certain extent but not much. I think I lost my crucial minute on the last 200 yards of the swim when I got caught up in the weeds. Oh well.

Event comments:

Small race but enjoyable despite the conditions. The swim course really could have been marked better and they should have done a better job at clearing the weeds in front of the beach. Other than that, everything was pretty good.
