Pre-race routine:

Out of bed at 6:15. Packed, dressed, made some gatorade, skipped breakfast and coffee. Hit the road at 6:40. My fiancee/cheering section was in Vegas for a friend's bachelorette party, so I was flying solo on this one.
Event warmup:

Parked and run/walked to the start (about a mile). Got my race number and timing chip. Ran into an old track and field buddy (he was doing the 5k). Caught up with him for a few minutes. Hit the port-a-john, warmed up with an easy mile, then stretched for 10 mins or so. Seeded myself near the middle of the pack at the starting line.

Comments:

My plan was to try to break 50:00 by holding a steady 8:15 pace to the turnaround, then hitting the gas for the last 2 miles of downhill. My HR was already in the 180's before the first mile marker, but I was feeling good. The route felt like it got steeper around mile 3, and I slowed slightly in that last push before the turnaround. I was breathing hard, and I didn't think I'd be able to go as fast on the downhill as I had hoped. Fortunately, I recovered quickly after the turn and was able to hold a sub-8:00/mile pace for the rest of the race.
If there was any doubt that I hadn't paced properly during the race, the last two miles put it to rest. I was able to finish strong because they were downhill, but my body felt thrashed.
What would you do differently?:

This wasn't a top-priority race, but rather a jump-start on the next phase of my triathlon training (and a test to see where my 10k ability is at these days). That said, I could have tried to get up to speed more quickly at the beginning, push harder on the hill coming up San Vicente, and have faith that I'd recover on the downhill side.
I should probably also avoid hilly bike rides the day before, but what are you gonna do.
Post race
Warm down:

Stumbled around in a daze for a few minutes before making my way to the expo on the Santa Monica pier. Had an apple, cereal bar, and a couple of sports drinks. One of which was zero calories, which makes no sense to me as a post race drink, but they were free. Got my shirt. It was actually a pretty lackluster post-race expo, given the magnitude of the race itself. However, the T-shirt is excellent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Haven't been logging nearly enough miles lately (let alone any speedwork/tempo runs). Difficult bike ride the day before may have impacted my running.

Event comments:

I really liked the way the course was laid out. Good weather, plenty of drink stations and volunteers (water only). Scenic, and a good mix of young, old, fast, and not so fast. Given the locale, there is potential for an awesome post-race expo; I just felt the elements weren't all there.
