Swim
Comments: The swim was really, really tough. I kept thinking - why am I doing this? But based on advice from a clinic I went to the week prior, I just kept putting one arm in front of the other. Whatever happened, the strokes just kept coming. My best 800m in the pool was 17:20, so finishing at 16 min was shocking for me. What would you do differently?: Get a little warm-up in. Not mistake the tri-it buoy for ours when first surveying the course. Transition 1
Comments: While not the fastest or greatest transition (I had practiced better), it was plenty fast for me. I arrived at T1 out of breath. My wet suit was off, bike shoes on, and helmet fastened way to fast for my cardio system to catch up. Even if I had gone faster, I'm not sure I could have got out of there yet. What would you do differently?: Had trouble mounting the bike. Need more practice on quick mounts and possible flying mounts at some point. Bike
Comments: I rocked the bike section. I'm on a mountain bike and moved up 85 positions during the bike segment. I was only passed by two road bikers (but many tri bikes). But I passed many road bikers. Road most of the entire distance in a modified aero position. I was also very happy with my running dismount. What would you do differently?: Tried eating some Clif power shots and they did not settle well. I've eaten them before in training rides, but never at this intensity. Will need to rethink on bike fueling. I also took off my shoes before getting a good calf stretch in, which caused some cramping in T2. Transition 2
Comments: Calves cramped a little while putting on shoes. I quickly stretched them before taking off, which likely added 10 seconds to my time. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Besides the calves cramping, I felt good coming in/out of T2. Run
Comments: Legs were toast from the bike segment. First 1.5 miles was at a really slow pace, well off what I had planned/expected. At the turn around I was able to up the pace a little, but still ended almost a minute higher than what I had hoped for. Finished strong, but could barely breath at the finish line. What would you do differently?: Go faster. Do more run training in a tired state or more bricks in preparation. Post race
Warm down: Recovered breath, did some basic stretching. Walked around quite a bit. What limited your ability to perform faster: I did not traing enough on bike at high speeds. I only really did two race pace training sessions on bike. Most of my riding casual, but longer rides. My legs were not ready for the sustained 35 minutes of pedaling followed by running. Event comments: It was my first race, but I was told it's very well organized and the transitions are better than average. I wouldn't argue. Things went off smoothly. I had a great time. Woke up 3 1/2 hours before race, ate a bagel and banana. Drank a double shot of espresso and some water. Packed car and headed off to event (leaving a little late because my wife had a hard time getting up).
Arrived a few minutes later than desired, but not too bad. Headed right to body markers and then got spot on assigned row. Set-up transition area. Had a power bar one hour prior to race. Headed off to bathroom and warm-up.
Did a slow 1/4 jog around park. Then got back to where my wife was sitting and realized briefing started in eight minutes. Just had time to get into wetsuit and get down to the water. Did not really have time to warm up in the water first, which was unfortunate. No bike warm-up, but did not plan one either.
