Total Time = 2h 09m 53s
Overall Rank = 44/81
Age Group = 20-24
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

I asked to be in the 25-29 age group because I will be 25 in July.. I ended up in the 20-24 age group with no competition.
6:00 am - ate my usual bowl of oatmeal with a banana, vanilla soymilk and some almonds. Took about 45 minutes to drive to the race and got there by 7:30 am. They were not yet ready for registration and were running around in a frenzy which made me nervous about the organization of the race ahead of me.

Event warmup:

Run about 5 minutes, swim about 10 minutes.

Swim
  • 21m 38s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 42s / 100 meters
Comments:

I am definitely not a swimmer, but I am trying my best to learn. This is my third open water race and so far at every one I spend a few minutes panicking at the start before I can begin taking any strokes. I think my panicking time is beginning to be a little bit less – I think this time was only a few minutes. I was having a lot of trouble sighting because my goggles fogged up. I am just happy that I finished this swim – I thought I was going to have to be pulled out in the beginning. I have heard that this swim course might be longer than ½ mile.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Not bad for my first time in a wetsuit
What would you do differently?:

More practice
Bike
  • 1h 16m
  • 24 miles
  • 18.95 mile/hr
Comments:

I passed a lot of people right away during the bike, I had a lot of ground to make up after that swim. I settled into a nice pace and slowly worked on picking people off. I ended up working with a guy who passed me – I passed him – he passed me, etc. It helped me to focus anyway.
What would you do differently?:

I probably held back a little too much in the bike. I forgot to restart my computer before the race so I had no idea how far or how long I had been riding.
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 32m 16s
  • 4 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

It was tough running in the sand at some areas. It was well marked though and they had a few water stops set up.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Run about 5-10 minutes, eat a cliff bar, stretch, chat with a lot of friendly people about our race experience.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It is early in the season so I am not in great shape.

Event comments:

The race was OK. Not worth $110, but I am happy that I had a good workout and met a lot of great people.
