Pre-race routine:

Non-specific though I did a few bike/run bricks early this week.
Event warmup:

Swam a few times out and back, kept it easy and slow.

Comments:

Several people thought that this was longer than 500m. The fastest swim time was only 8:09, so who knows.

I felt good. I started out easy and after the first buoy I felt great and picked up my pace a bit. I'm still cautious as I didn't want to burn myself out, but I soon found myself having to pass people. This was not an issue last year. Cought up with some of the group who started before me, so that was encouraging, but I knew that I still wasn't going fast.

Rounded the last buoy and kicked it in to overdrive. It hurt, but I was able to hold it until I got to the beach. I'm happy, but I know that I still need to be faster. 1:30 off the swim and I would have taken 2nd (just food for thought)
What would you do differently?:

I need to keep on it in the OW training and get some additional coaching. Oly next year!

This was my first race attempt to mount with my shoes already clipped in on my bike. I practiced. But there was so much mudd in transition that I could not get off before mounting the bike. So I had multiple attempts to clean off my feet and get them in my shoes, they were just so gritty.

I also had a small issue getting the zipper down on my wetsuit. never had that problem before.
What would you do differently?:

T1 was fast for me. Yea!

I got up to 28 at one point, but the hills actually hurt and I dropped below 16 a few times. So I compensated by nailing the drop side of the hills.

I felt good on the bike, but I was a bit frustrated that I wasn't going faster. I got passed a couple of times but since they weren't in my AG :) I didn't attack. I tried a few different gearing options during the ride to see if I could pick up the pace, but with hitting the downside of the hills like I did, I didn't have it in me to push hard on the flat areas, so I kept a comfortable gear and avg cadence.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure. I think the heat/humidity and wind were brutal. The winning bike speeds weren't over 21mph, so I was working as well as the others on the bike, but I wanted more speed.

Wow, 34 seconds. Again, fast in transition. It must have been that I was afraid of getting stuck in the mud pits.
What would you do differently?:

I couldn't find my Garmin wrist strap, so I wasted no time looking for it. Down side to that was that I had no idea of my pace during the run.

I didn't feel quite right on the run. I felt slower than I should have, but I couldn't confirm my pace without the Garmin. I know I don't need it for the race, but I think that I would have pushed a bit harder knowing that I was barely going to break 24 on the run.

Overall I felt like I maintained my pace well, those in front of me didn't pull away and I didn't pass those who were pacing me.

I'll blame the heat and humidity for part of this. I was sweating like you wouldn't believe. At the turn around I took 2 waters and drank some and dumped the rest over my head and shoulders to cool off.
What would you do differently?:

I hydrated well in the days leading up to this race as I knew it was going to be hot. The run went well, others were also around my same basic time. I think the weather conditions were huge for this race.

I should get back into the speed work and intervals before my next tri.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rain the whole day and night before the race left the course and transition area crappy wet. Then the heat of 94 degrees and very high humidity were brutal.

Event comments:

3 Disciplines organized this race. The past few races that I've done with them have gone well. I'll probable always do this race because it's so close to home.

Course: An out and back course that I've had the pleasure of riding multiple times. So I had the home field advantage. I knew when the hills were coming and where to drop the hammer. Problem was, there was either a strong headwind or crazy crosswinds the whole course (except the 1.5 mile ride in the park).
