Swim
Comments: Seeing how this was my first overall open water swim (as well as my first Olympic distance tri and second tri total), I would say the swim went exceptionally well. After my previous days' experience where I thought it was a lost cause, I was "swimmingly" surprised at my performance. I was training in a 25 meter pool for this event, and upon seeing the course the day before I thought it looked huge. I had to keep telling myself that I had swam the proper distance in training. In training, I was swimming about a 35-36min pace for the race distance. When I found out that I had crushed that time, I was stoked! Encountered little traffic seeing how my age group was last to start the swim. What would you do differently?: Masters swim classes or a swim coach to help improve the efficiency of my stroke, which would decrease my overall time. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: I had riden as a part of a team last year with a pace of 19.1mL/hr (time of about 1:09:00). Was super disappointed that I couldn't duplicate the same type of performance as last year. I guess the wind had a lot to do with this. I also had an aerobar pad that was secured tight enough, so the pad angle kept being pushed down by the weight of my arm that required frequent brute force to adjust it mid ride. What would you do differently?: Pray for less wind.... Transition 2
Run
Comments: Had been told of the massive hills on this portion of the event, still wasn't totally prepared for what was waiting. I passed my brother between mile one and two. He told me that the first two miles were the worst. I agree, except for the turn around (rather small mountain there). Felt good for the most part of the run. No cramping issues. Stopped for water and gatorade at every station. The water mostly went over the head to keep me cool. What would you do differently?: Train with more hill work. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: WIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Event comments: Seeing how this was my first Olympic distance triathlon, I would have to say that I am rather pleased with my performance. I had two goals going into the race. First was just to finish the race. Second was to finish in under 3 hours. Check! Check! Plan on competing in one more triathlon this year (Dragonfly). Contemplating competing in the ironman florida 70.3 this time next year. I have run a couple of half marathons and one marathon. I have also ridden several organized longer rides. With these experiences and the triathlon experience from this year, I think that would be a nice challenge.... Last updated: 2009-05-20 12:00 AM

Saturday --> Picked up the race pack and went for a "practice swim" (more like panic practice). I got in the water and swam about half way to the final turn bouy. Made it back and began to reconsider what I had gotten myself into. After a night of ego stroking from my brother and one of our friends, both who were competing this year as well as last year, told myself I had completed far more difficult tasks in life.
Got up at 430, ate two pieces of Cinnamon toast, a half an orange, and a 100 calorie coke (this is my coffee). Loaded my gear in the car and picked up my brother, where we loaded the bikes. Arrived at the race site at about 615. Went a selected my transition box and bike rack and got body marked. Since my age group was last to start, I had almost two hours to kill off. To pass the time, I put my headphones in my ears and zoned out to the latest Kings of Leon album (recommend it!). As the swim time got closer, I stretched for about 15 minutes and the other half of my breakfast orange and some G2.
