Swim
Comments: This would be a good confidence-building open water swim for those uncomfortable in the water. The water deepens very slowly from the beach. You can mostly stand as needed throughout the course. Also, there weren't tons of people per wave and we started in the water, not from the beach. Easy to avoid contact with other swimmers. What would you do differently?: more OW practices so I can trust my straight swim ability. I wasted a lot of time sighting when I was on course. A wetsuit would be nice. This water can be much colder than what we got in 2009. Transition 1
Comments: I stepped on the open GU. Sticky. had to rinse grit/GU off my feet then sit to get shoes on. I chose to skip gloves to save a little time. What would you do differently?: I need more practice putting shoes on wet feet and on mounting/clipping in. I had trouble mounting and clipping in. My bike wasn't quite settled in gear either. I still need lots more practice on running starts and clippin in. Bike
Comments: bike computer wasn't picking up data. That REALLY threw me. I rely on that to ensure I keep my cadence high. I also convinced myself that I was off course, that somehow I had started racing on the Olympic length course for the later July tri. I saw some cyclists passing me going the other way (probably they were riding the Olympic course and training for the July 5th Caesar Creek Triathlon, rather than racing I know now). NOTHING looked familiar although I'd ridden the course a few times. I almost stopped and turned around. I know it slowed me down. Much cussing. Very little wind What would you do differently?: relax. breath. go faster ;-) Transition 2
Comments: paused for a drink and sat to change shoes. I had to scoot bikes to make room for mine as I was one of the last in. Run
Comments: I loved the shade and the trail run. My family met me on the sidewalk coming up. My 3 and 5 year olds ran with me past my team (Cincy Express, yay!) who were cheering me on. HFP Racing handed me my age group plaque as I finished. They gave me 3rd place (out of a group of 2!) oh well... What would you do differently?: nothing, really. I just need to keep training so that I get faster. Post race
Warm down: walked just a bit. What limited your ability to perform faster: first season training. Event comments: I think this is a great race for the new triathlete. The open water is shallow. There aren't massive crowds of competitors. The bike course is rolling. The run is pretty flat and mostly shaded. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Plus there is another sprint on this same course (bike the opposite direction) just a month later. It's a great chance to see the improvement as you train. Last updated: 2009-05-24 12:00 AM

up at 4:45am, ate regular breakfast (oatmeal & coffee). I was on the road by 5:45am I double checked that everything was ready for Niranjan/kids to bring later (cookout, beach outing planned for post race)
had a real Coke (with sugar and caffeine!) as I drove in.
Checked in, set up transition, and applied massive quantities of sun screen. Chatted with Tim, who'd come up to see the race. The UAT official made sure we all racked our bikes alternating wheels down. We were told to access T1/2 wheel down side of the rack only. He said there's a new rule coming about that so be ready...
I swam about 500 yds. The water was cool enough to make it hard to breath and keep my face in properly. A wetsuit would have been wonderful. Once warmed up, the water felt fine and I stayed in until kicked out.
