![]() Run
Comments: I ran segments 1,3, and 5 since Robin was the better biker. Segment 1: First one was 1.2 miles. Uphill at first. This was only my second run since the half ironman so I was puffing a little. But once we turned downhill I started passing folks a lot. I am pretty good at trail running down a hill. Only turned one ankle. Heard someone gasp, but it didn't phase me...Kept on running! Segment 3: This segment was only 1.0 mile. My legs were a little bit rubbery coming off the mountain bike but only for a few hundred yards. I was slower, but not out yet! Segment 5: Last one...1.1 miles. Pretty benign, mostly on grassy dirt, and up a big hill to finish on a downhill. Turned another ankle and yet again scare everyone but myself. Hmmm...strange. Pass more people :) My legs were toast and I was sweating a lot...but I kept on plugging knowing that Robin on the mountain bike was probably waiting at the finish! What would you do differently?: Try to drink more. I was pretty thirsty. Though the race was less than an hour...I shouldn't have needed fluids... Also...if we had been serious about this race...riding 50 miles the day before would not have been the best idea. My legs were tired from the get-go from that ride!!!! ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Summary of all the transitions: Segments 1/2: Run to bike: Obstacle was a simple wall...easy peasy. Found the bike almost instantly (chalk one up for good planning) and I was on my way! Less than a minute I'm sure. Segments 2/3: Bike to run: Robin was waiting for me...drat...she must have ridden and run really fast! I handed her the bike and went to the obstacle which was a cargo net up one of those air thingies. Slide down the back. Again benign. Still probably less than a minute... Segements 3/4: Run to Bike: Another cargo net but no air thing. A little harder since the cargo net wasn't very taught. Went as fast as I could. Found the bike easily (chalk 2 up to good planning) and went on my merry way. Segments 4/5: Bike to run: Dang it...Robin is waiting for me again...I must be low. Last obstacle...monkey bars! I definitely showed up the girl next to me...nice hand over hand action...none of that two handed crap. Another fast transition Segment 5/Finish: THE MUD PIT!!! We belly crawled through it admirably :) What would you do differently?: Bike faster so Robin isn't waiting in all the transitions for the bike! ![]() Bike
Comments: I biked segments 2 and 4. Whew! It's been YEARS! I used to mountain bike some in high school...but even then I was a big wuss. So this was TOUGH! Last time I road a mountain bike was about 2 years ago...and I gave up on the trails in a few minutes. Heehee..I walked a lot! Segment 2: 1.1 miles...just got used to the bike. Managed to stay on for several downhills that I saw other folks walking...just took it nice and easy. Then I saw a huge downhill that landed in a stream and went right back uphill...I walked it :) Segment 4: 1.3 miles and the infamous Hill of Death. Yeah, it was ugly...EVERYBODY was walking up it including the runners! Again, about half easy flats and gentle hills, with bits of major scariness (for me). Every time I tried to ride up a hill I would get stuck :( What would you do differently?: Ride better :) Be less of a weenie! ![]() Post race
Warm down: Crossed the finish line completely muddy. Guzzled two bottles of cytomax because I was SOOOO thirsty. Waited in line for a picture with the muddy buddy frogs...then went to the 'hose down' area. Think several hundred people, stripping off muddy clothes and hosing each other down. I THINK I got hit on...some guys offered to finish getting my back washed off...it took them awhile...hmmmmm... After the rinsing off, we went to the car to fully demuddify....Luckily Robin's truck is HUGE so we stood between it and the woods, threw the doors out and basically had our own semi-private dressing room. Upon removing the rest of our clothes we discovered we were still covered with mud. We were using the remaining water in our water bottle to try to remove some of it. Best line of the day comes from Robin as she is dumping water on her muddy boobs: "We have a porno going on back here!" Heehee! I think the guys in the truck next to us were trying to get a glimpse. We are not sure if they succeeded. But Robin definitely got a glimpse of THEM. She said she wasn't impressed. Clean and dry again we went off in search of the beer garden. I had two Red Hooks :) Mmmmmm..... What limited your ability to perform faster: Uh...haven't run in over a month, haven't mountain biked in years. But this wasn't about performing...it was about having fun and we definitely did that! Woohoo! Event comments: Lots of fun! Great show! Need more beer taps for the post race and stop being idiots about not letting people walk around with beer in their hands...sheesh! Overall...we had a ton of fun...we did some running, we did some biking, and we got DIRTY! :) Robin is now reinterested in riding her mountain bike :) She finished the course and said that she forgot how fun mountain biking was. The overall time is accurate. I couldn't believe we did so well in our division without training! Only 40 seconds separated us from 9th place...winners were 10 minutes up. If we actually trained...I think we could place :) All the 'split' times are estimates...kinda divided from what our overall time was...I wasn't wearing a watch, so I have NO IDEA if they are accurate! Woke up gosh awful early. Drove about 45 minutes out to the race site...in the middle of nowhere outside of Austin. Parked the HUGE truck my friend Robin has, and realized...dang...we're early. Slept in the truck for about an hour. Various events were happening as we slept...we heard the race announcer talk about the pre-race meeting...looked at our watches...yeah, we got another 20 minutes to sleep. Announcer said that the shuttle was passing overhead...sure enough, opened the sunroof...there was a star-like looking thing moving quickly across the sky. Neat. Back to sleep... About 15 minutes prior to the pre-race meeting we dragged ourselves out of the truck, pinned on numbers, walked to the porta-potties, then up to the meeting. Somewhere in there PB&J happened, but not in the porta potty :)
Warm up? Walking/riding to the start.
