Pre-race routine:

Woke at 3:45, took Tagemet (acid reducer), vitamin, Allegra. Arrived at 5:15, shuttle to site, dark - no lights, set up trans area with flashlight. Beautiful sunrise. Ate 2 mini bagels with egg/potato/cheese + banana - 1 hour before start. Stretched at home, light stretch at site, drank 32 oz of Powerade and water. Marked in transition area. Didn't bother pumping up tires - 90% pressure. Several trips to porta cans.
Event warmup:

Gathered with other ladies at water start, announcer pumped us up, great dance music, Shelia Tourmalino (gold olympic champion) in the crowd to give high fives (got one). Arm swing/rotations, stretched back once again. Sisters Sharon and Becky found me, wished me well, photos. Left flip flops at entrance, never to be seen again. Wave 1 - elites, wave 2 (blue caps) all over age of 55, 3rd wave was my group (yellow caps 50-54), 4th (green caps), 5th (pink caps), don't remember any others

Comments:

Lots of family/friends called my name and cheered me on - loved it! Slipped into my mule keds ran up the hill while putting stick sun screen on face, removed goggles/cap. Got to transition and had to rinse feet because all the sand still between toes.
What would you do differently?:

Become a better/stronger swimmer. (Wish I had learned as a child.) I had 3 open water swim clinics before event but nothing could simulate the huge crowd of women swimming around, into and on top of me. I need to be more aggressive in the water and improve siting so I don't venture off course.
Transition 1
  • 04m 29s
Comments:

I need to speed it up a little more. Either forget the shoes at swim exit or something - get some tougher feet. Exiting T1, volunteers stopped us so that returning cyclists to come in for their T2. That was 30 seconds at least. Outside of T1 - just over the mount line, women stopped and got in the way. Some had trouble getting started - was almost hit by one.
What would you do differently?:

I should run far ahead of women at mount line and get on bike.

Comments:

I was more aggressive on ride. After the 90 degree turn at Blue Bluff - big hill. I had to go wide to avoid the cluster of women who stopped to walk up hill or were struggling to keep going. During the turn I had dropped to my center ring and backed off the small ring to allow me to climb at an easier pace (coaches advice worked). Got to the right after clearance and let other women pass. Climb was hard but dropping gears helped - asked the woman ahead of me if she was about to stop - that would have been disaster - no room to go around her on left! She moved over to the right and let me pass. Lots of encouragement given by other women - I encouraged some too. Rode past runners inside park fence - encouraged them. Judy yelled out my name and encouraged me - elt good to have the support. She was running strong.
What would you do differently?:

Buy a road bike, do timed trainings, improve hill climbs, change from toe clips to clipless.
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Before entering T2 - drank more from Camelback. I had left myself a note to remember to take off my helmet and gloves. Already had my race belt and number on. Didn't need to change my shoes. Grabbed my visor and cold bandana and ran out while I was putting them on. Opened Cliff Shot with caffiene to consume on first part of run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run

  • 3.1 miles

Comments:

Jogged an even pace for most of the run - walked a few short distances. My shins and calves didn't hurt like I expected - guess my rest did help. Lots of encouragement from volunteers and cyclists. I hoped to run the course in 35 minutes - met my goal. Before finish Judy ran with me and pushed me to sprint - so glad she did. I finished strong and it felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Run more before the race - work on timing, hills and sprinting. I waited too late to start my training for the run and struggled with pain in shins/calves/hips with every run.
Post race
Warm down:

I really didn't warm down, went to stretch area and had volunteer helped me stretch. Walked around the tents/booths for freebies, lots of photos with Judy, sisters Becky, Sharon, and husband Greg. Thanked friends for support. Ate a little, drank a lot of water (should have drank sports drink.)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not being an efficient swimmer, not siting enough. Mountain bike was heavy, not as aero dynamic.

Event comments:

This was my first Tri so I can't compare with others but I enjoyed every minute - even the 36 mins I spent in my very long, long private tour of the lake. It was a big challenge to complete in the time I thought I could do. My goal was under 2 hours - I made it in 2:09. I will do it again and improve my time and strategy during parts of the race next year. Thanks to hubby Greg, Sharon, Becky, Judy, Janice, Gabe, Ron, swim classmates, and others for the encouragement. It is fun (and hard) to be fit but worth every mile.

I am a novice swimmer - learned to swim for this Tri - still taking lessons. Tried to start strong, was kicked each time I tried to freestyle, so did breast stroke until clear, stayed to left of crowd, lots of bumping, kicking, my heart rate (not measured) was high, out of breath the first 2/3rd of swim, felt stressed, was ran over by several green caps (wave behind me), wondered if I was going to finish. Had to do some self-talk to calm myself. Rounded the buoy, ventured off course way to the left twice. More self-talk, tried to get balanced, kept head down, elbows high, streamlined/TPR style, breathing under control, sited but not enough, made good progress but ventered toward center of lake for 3rd time, tapped on shoulder by kayacker to get me back on course. Got back into crowd, swam with a lady from swim class (green cap)- she commented, "this is nothing like class". Two breast stokers having a chat-fest beside me (not sure how). 5th & 6th wave passed me, was hit in the face by very driven pink cap swimmer, had a backstroker swim up on my back, finally I found a clear spot and began swimming like they taught us in swim class and started making progress in a straigt line, site effort good. I had vertigo 60% of the swim - never felt sick - just dizzy. Disappointed in my time but I am proud I did my first 800 meter swim and didn't scream for help!
Suit: tri top and bottoms
Course: U-shaped - lead was not well marked so swimmers were going to far left before 1st buoy. Small buoys marked center of U. Blue flags marked exit. I purposely swam all the way to shore until I touched bottom - as instructed in OW class. Not as many volunteers on the exit - expected to be scooped up but one strong guy volunteer grabbed my hand and helped me up. Good exit, no dizziness or stumbling.

Didn't wear HR monitor. Felt strong on bike for most part - passed lots of women but was passed by lots of stronger women too. My mountain bike is not as efficient as a road bike. Remembered to use my core, relax shoulders. Obstacles - many of slower cyclists would not stay to right - some would stop without warning. I announced "passing on the left" - some would not move over. I drank the Propel in my Camelback. No time for a Cliff Shot.
Wind: Little
Course: Around perimeter of Walter E. Long Park. Most are secondary or country roads with some potholes, broken pavement and no shoulder. One lane blocked for riders. A few roads allowed oncoming (escorted) traffic on the left side. Was worried about following the USAT rules and not draft and pass within 15 seconds. Not sure others were as concerned.

It was getting hot - every water stop I grabbed 2 cups (dixie size) and poured one on my head, and tried to drink the other but would spill most down my front. After fast walking the first couple of minutes to loosen legs started into a slow jog then tried to speed up. Felt okay with pace. Found hubby along the way - Greg encourged me to keep going and stay strong which helped.
Course: Grassy and dirt trails. Some rough spots, had to watch the ground to avoid big rocks and holes. Some places were narrow and hard to pass the walkers. Found another runner and we kept same pace going for awhile until next water stop - she kept going - I got more water. Some spots were hotter than others - trees blocked breeze. There were a couple of good hills to climb. No trouble on first hill - second one I walked part way.
