![]() Swim
Comments: Tough time at start getting breathing down since I could not exhale in the water due to its low temperature. Was actually on my back within the first 100 yards to let people go ahead of me and calmed myself down. I had read about first timers freaking out in their first open water swim and was starting to do the same myself. Calmed down and by the time I got to the turn buoy I had found my stroke, could exhale in the water and brought it in to the end at a good clip. Without the little freak-out this could have been a 10 minute swim. What would you do differently?: Swim more in the wetsuit to get used to the confinement. With more experience in the open water my swim time should improve. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Walked down the hill to transition since I was just happy to be out of the water. Not experienced getting out of the wetsuit. Put bike cleats on in transition. What would you do differently?: Left sunglasses in duffle bag and not in helmet. Wasted a few second digging for them. Need to remember that next time. Other than that I should get faster with experiance. ![]() Bike
Comments: Did not drink out of the swim or on the bike. Time is actually shorter since I stopped to use the bathroom at the end of the ride before entering the transition area. Just set my bike down near the porta-john. So bike time is really about 2 minutes faster. What would you do differently?: Overall was happy with the ride considering my ability. Handled the hills fine for my skill. Should have gone into the transition area and then come out to use the bathroom so that delay would have added to the T2 time and not the bike time. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Drank a bunch of Powerade since I did not drink on the bike. What would you do differently?: I thought this was quicker, was surpised I was over 2 minutes. I need to get those laces you pull and don't have to tie. Drink on the bike. ![]() Run
Comments: Flat with some hills that were not brutal, more of a mental downer. Probably ran first mile in 10 minutes, second in 9+ and then the last in the low 8's since it took me to the second pass at the water station to get my run legs. So the run took more time than I was expecting. One water station you pass three times is all that is on the course. What would you do differently?: More bricks to get used to running after cycling. Decided not to bring my Garmin since it was a short run. Should have brought that to get a better idea of my pace. ![]() Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Just a lack of experience. If I had to do this again today, would be well over 5 minutes faster if not closer to 10 minutes faster overall. Event comments: First triathlon for me. Volunteers were great, great tri for a beginner. The only time the town allows swimming in the lake is for this event, so it's very murcky with rocks on the entry and ankle deep muck at the end of the swim. Can't see at all in the water. For $80+ they should at least come up with a better shirt than one with the logo on the left breast and nothing on the back. This race was full of begginers and we want a shirt that shows off our accomplishment. That kept me from giving this a 4 rating. Last updated: 2009-06-02 12:00 AM

Got there before 6:30 to pick up number and a pitiful T-shirt. No goody bag. For my first triathlon I was hoping for at least a better shirt to show off. Ate PB&J sandwich at 7AM. Two trips to bathroom and put wet suit on for 7:30 pre-race meeting.
Short swim in the cold lake.
