Pre-race routine:

Spent Saturday getting stuff together, making last minute bike tweaks and dealing with pre-race jitters. Sunday am, woke up around 5:15am and had a cup of coffee and a bagel. Then began hydrating with Gatorade. Wife dropped me off (race is 4mi. from my house) around 6:30 which allowed enough time to scope things out and chat with some veterans.
Event warmup:

20 minutes prior, had a dose of power gel and then went for a 5 minute warmup swim which helped to loosen up and shake off the pre-race jitters.
Swim
  • 15m 5s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

At the start of the race I began in the middle of the pack somewhat on the inside. Decided to go for the inside route. Immediately got introduced to triathlon swimming with all of the jostling, fighting for position. A couple of times I had to look up to find an opening to get by some slower swimmers. Hit the two corner bouys perfectly but almost missed the intermediates and in fact had to back track as I realized I was swimming by on the wrong side! Overall, I felt good about the swim. Feel I could easily shave off a minute with just some more experience.
What would you do differently?:

Start a bit more in front and outside at the start. Several times I was looking to swim around other swimmers.
Make sure my goggles are tighter, as they got knocked out of position once.
Be more aggressive!
Transition 1

Comments:

Not sure of the time, but it was pretty quick and smooth.
Bike
  • 36m 42s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall, I felt like I've should've done better. But for my first tri I can't complain. Need to do some more training and make sure my bike is optimally fitted.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Don't know exact time.
Felt pretty quick. A little tricky running with cleats from the unmount point down the hill to the rack. No probs switching shoes.
What would you do differently?:

practice quicker dismounts?
Run
  • 28m 46s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran a bit conservatively. The trail up the hill was tough and like other runners before me, walked the steep rocky part.
Overall, I feel I had a slow pace the first half, and then after the trail hill, picked it up and finished the end strong. Plenty of room for improvement for next time.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace a bit sooner in the first half.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of experience on the bike and run.

Event comments:

Very enjoyable race for a 1st timer. I'd recommend this race to other 1st timers if your a good swimmer but would also recommend you run the run portion first.

Course: First half treks through nice quiet and friendly residential neighborhoods. Especially appreciative of the occasional hose spray. The off-road trail make the run interesting and challenging. The uphill trek through the woods is really steep and full of roots and rocks. Very slippery when wet.
